    1. The first half of my essay:
Kids Should Not Have Summer Homework
Everybody wants to run out of school on the last day and have no thoughts of homework, because school’s out, right? Wrong. Nowadays, starting at middle school, and sometimes even in elementary school, many kids are happy for a short time after school’s over. They then realize that they are not completely free until they finish several summer assignments. Many middle and high schools pile up assignments over the summer. This homework is often required to succeed in the next school year. Many think it will help students review or learn needed school-related skills over the summer. But isn’t summer a time for fun? After 9 months of stress, students should be able to rest. I think there should not be required summer homework in schools.
An aspect teachers should think about when assigning homework over the summer is that it is very stressful to complete, especially when there are many other classes that assign summer homework. In the article, “Should Kids Get Summer Homework?” by Leslie Crawford, it lists a 17 year old student’s summer workload: She was required to “read five novels for AP english, read one book for AP history, complete a packet for both AP calculus and AP chemistry, and write summaries of scientific principles for honors physics.” It was very stressful for her to complete, and along with doing many other recommended activities, it was even more difficult to try and enjoy her summer. Students need a break from all the stress during the 9-month school year. Shouldn’t they be entitled to a carefree summer? In addition, many students procrastinate and leave their summer assignments to the very last week of summer. So in the back of their mind they are thinking all summer, “Oh my gosh, I still haven’t done my homework!” so they are unable to fully enjoy their summer and have extreme amounts of stress when they finally sit down the week before school starts to do the assignments. I
am not saying that we have been assigned tons of homework this summer, because this is not an extreme workload, but in high school it gets way worse, especially in advanced classes. Besides stress-related symptoms like muscle pain, compulsiveness, overreaction, and excessive sweating, summer homework (and sometimes even homework in general) can cause other health problems. On a debate site topic titled “The Crush of Summer Homework,” Nancy Kalish argues, “kids spend fewer hours being physically active, which is essential for good health and weight control, not to mention proper brain development.” I agree with this statement. Kids and teens need to spend more time enjoying summer and being active, not staring at a screen or a math paper. The stress of summer homework hurts kids in many ways, mentally and physically.

    2. The second half:
Summer should be a time to have fun, not sit through hours of toil. As long as kids can be creative and use their time wisely to have a great summer, that should be enough and more worthwhile than any “assignment.” In the article “Should Kids Get Homework Over the Summer?”, a care.com employee, Leisa, says, “Letting my kids figure out how to stay busy ... gives them life-long skills they can’t necessarily pick up from the math packet their school sent home.” Other skills summer homework takes away from is time to play with friends, which encourages teamwork and social/emotional intelligence. In addition, many high-school students want and need to work jobs in the summer. Usually, their earnings go to their college education. However, summer assignments suck up time to earn money by doing a job you like. It is harder for students to pay for college education when some of their job hours are replaced by summer homework. In summary, summer homework sucks time away from having fun, being active, relaxing, learning through discovery, acquiring fun skills, and working occupations.
It all comes down to this question: Why is summer homework even assigned? Is it necessary and is it really a true evaluation of a student’s capabilities? In the article, “Why Do We Give Students Summer Assignments? Seriously, Why?”, David Theriault (a teacher himself) illustrates many points about why students should not have summer assignments. He argues that students have no interactions with teachers when doing summer assignments and no feedback or checking of the understanding of the content from teachers in the summer homework process. He says, “Are we really expecting students to tackle difficult material without their teachers?” I believe students do not reach their full potential when they are without help and support from their teachers. You might ask, “Well, shouldn’t the parents be assisting the kids with their summer assignments?” They can, but they shouldn’t have to be committed to it. Besides, not all parents are certified teachers, and would not be as beneficial to a child’s learning as a real teacher that has been trained to help people learn. David even yells in all capitals, “WHY EVEN HAVE SCHOOLS OR TEACHERS?”(Sorry I know I wasn’t supposed to use all caps but this is how it was in the article). This is a good point because nowadays, required education isn’t just happening at school. It is at home, in the summer, and the parents usually have to help to deal with it. Also, summer assignments should not be treated as a requirement or prerequisite for the next grade. In David’s article he states, “The prerequisite, the dedication was shown LAST YEAR when they took a certain course-load and earned the right grades!” This definitely makes sense because students already earned their place in the class by their hard work and success in the previous year. Summer homework is not really necessary for many reasons and doesn’t accurately reflect a student’s full potential.
I believe students should not be required to complete assignments over the summer. First, it can be a lot of work and become harmful to a student’s health. Secondly, students deserve a break during the summer months to have fun and do other activities. Finally, summer homework is not needed and is not an accurate evaluation of a student’s full potential, because teacher support is needed to reach that. Many people have written articles about this topic and it is a rising issue in education. Summer homework should not be required in schools.

    8. How Does Pollution Affect Us
      www.edf.org/cleanair‎
      www.theworldcounts.com/stories/How-Does-Pollution-Affect-Humans
Pollution is a growing problem that needs to stop. There is so many different ways that you can pollute that affect the environment. Pollution affects humans, animals, and the environment. Pollution is killing lots of people and making some places unliveable. Here is why we need to stop polluting.
First of all, pollution is very dangerous. If you live in places where the smog level is too high, “When inhaled, smog irritates our airways, increasing our risk of serious heart and lung diseases.” And, “Breathing polluted air puts you at a higher risk for asthma and other respiratory diseases.” Pollution is the cause of multiple sicknesses that can affect you for your whole life. Another thing pollution affects are animals. There is multiple ways that pollution can affect animals, one way is when the smog levels are to high and the air you breathe is not clean, it pushes the animals from their habitat and they lose their home. Another way that pollution affects animals is that animals will mistaken it for food, eat it, and then another animal will eat them, and that piece of litter goes down the food chain putting chemicals in all of the animals body’s and shortening their lifetime. Animals can also accidentally get caught in the pollution and choke and die. Lastly, pollution also affects the environment in various ways, one way is the pollution can get into spots in the ocean and make them toxic. Pollution also affects the ozone layer, which is crucial to our survival.
As you can see, pollution is a very serious problem that affect different people in various ways, but nothing good comes from it. People should take a couple days a year and just help go clean the environment, because this is the only one we got and if something happens to it, we would all die. So I hope next time you are bored and have nothing to do, that you would take a couple hours out of your day to go and clean up the environment.

    2. Global Warming
Everybody wants to think that the smallest things can’t hurt the Earth, because Earth looks great, right? Wrong. Today, our Earth is constantly getting polluted, but many people don’t know that. They should realize even they’re polluting the Earth every once in a while. Also, they need to realize Global Warming is in their everyday lives and it could only get worse. Many people don’t believe that there is global warming, but It’s there. But isn’t the air always clean? You don’t here people pass away to bad air, don’t you think we’re fine? I think we should clean and care about the air.
A side of the situation people should see is that this could become very dangerous, especially when the reason to all this is carbon pollution. In the article, “Global Warming: Seeing is Believing” by Cool Effect (n.d.), https://www.cooleffect.org/content/globalwarming, it shows that “Unfortunately, carbon pollution-the actual case of global warming-is invisible to us.” When all the people realize what they’re fighting they will know what to do. This will annoy them which will make them want to fight it. You won’t want to be stressed about it so you’ll want to make that life changing difference. In addition, the Earth only keeps getting warmer. So it shows that it will get dangerous soon. People get stressed about these things so to live a better life try to fix these small things that will turn into much bigger things. I’m not saying you have to help no matter what but it would be better if you do. On a debate site topic called “Understanding the Global Warming Debate”, by Warren Meyer says that “Likely you have heard the sound bite that 97% of the climate scientists accept the global warming consensus.” I agree with this statement. People need to spend more time on things that may not be the biggest issues. The stress of global warming is big on some people.
I believe we should care about our air and start understanding global warming. First, global warming will get to a point where It’s dangerous because our enemy is invisible (carbon pollution). Secondly, people deserve to not be stressed because that could make you sad and hard to live a good life. Finally, 97% of our climate scientists believe in global warming and they pay attention the most so It is dangerous. Many people have written articles about this devastating topic. Global warming should not become dangerous and stressful to us all.

  7. In the year 2026, eight years from now, the the men's World Cup will be held in North America. This is such an honor for our country to be a part of the host nations. Many people, including me are very excited not just for the soccer but also for the benefits for our country. I think that we will benefit from this opportunity in many ways, Including a financial gain from tourism, better infrastructure and the coming together of cultures.
The first way we will benefit is the financial gain from tourism. The World Cup brings so many people to one place that it creates billions of dollars for the country. “The World Cup makes billions of dollars via ticket sales sponsorship and more.” (Why on earth do countries want to host the FIFA world cup?) People from all over the world will be buying tickets, using our public transportation, eating in restaurants and staying in US hotels all over the country. The United States will result in huge financial gains from this increase in tourism.
The United States will also benefit from the world cup by creating better infrastructure. The World Cup requires good infrastructure because of all of the tourists who use the roads and transportation to come and watch the games. “Not only building sports facilities but building bridges, airports, roads and railroads need to be developed to their best standards.” (Benefits of the FIFA World Cup) The World Cup will be the perfect reason to update our infrastructure. The result of renovating and building new facilities will benefit the tourists that are here to enjoy the World Cup but will also be left for us to enjoy when the tournament is finished.
The last way we will benefit from the World Cup is cultural and political.“In 1994 USA hosted the World Cup that event set attendance records.” (United States Mexico and Canada will host the 2026 World Cup) The World Cup is such a big event that diverse people from all around the world will come to watch. This diverse groups will interact with local people and share their culture. They will bring their beliefs in religion, views and daily life. Intern the United States will be able to showcase not only our beautiful land but our way of living. This will help people to understand and accept different cultures.
As you can see there are many benefits that will come when the United States co-hosts the World Cup in 2026. We will benefit from a financial gain from tourism, better infrastructure and the coming together of cultures. The United States should be so exited and deeply honored to have this opportunity. This major event in history will move our country forward in so many ways. It is an exciting time and I cannot wait to see the impact it will have on our country and our people.

  9. Eating Organic
    Samantha Nidiffer
    6-27-2018

Eating organic is very important. Child obesity is inclining. Organic food can't control obesity, but it can help prevent it. Organic is healthier and safer to eat. More and more people are starting to eat organic. It helps keep our world in balance. Organic is better for you and your family.
The term “organic” associates with agriculture grown and processed. In the USA, organic farming uses no pesticides. The article, Organic Foods, What You Need to Know, states that,” Organic produce is grown with natural fertilizers(manure, compost). Conveniently- grown produce is grown with sympathetic or chemical fertilizers.” Chemical fertilizers are bad for people. Meat, dairy and eggs can all be organic and Non GMO. “ Organic meats, dairy, eggs; Livestock are given hormone and GMO free feed. Conveniently-grown meats, dairy, eggs; Livestock are given growth hormones for faster growth, as well as NON Organic GMO feed.” GMO is something that people use to make meats and produce bigger and juicier. You might think, “what‘s the problem with that?”. Well, GMO is chemicals going into the food. Not the good chemicals either. “Antioxidants are important nutrients found in fresh fruits and vegetables and have been shown to impart multiple health benefits, including the prevention of many cancers. Some studies show that organic foods may have more antioxidants compared to commercial varieties.” Human Health Benefits of Eating Organic. Organic food has more nutritions, vitamins and minerals.
As you can see, eating organic is better for you, the animals, and it can keep you healthier. Eating organic is spreading fast. Stores are display
Ing more organic food in their inventory. Next time you go shopping look for organic and get your family aware of what comercial grown produce can do to you.

  11. School Should Begin Later

After Elementary it has been noted sleep loss becomes a more relevant topic. Most middle schools begin at 7 to 7:30 a.m. but most kids fall asleep by 10 or 11 p.m. and usually students need an extra hour to get ready so they begin their day at 6 or earlier, so that leaves us with 7 hours of sleep. This argument isn’t new to the world its just been catching the public eye recently. I believe later school starts will benefit students of all ages because there are many hazards when you don't get enough sleep, it is proven that students do not do well on tests without a good night's rest, and there are more teen car accidents also due to a lack of sleep. Disorders can occur if you do not have a good night's sleep like depression, cardiovascular problems, and athletic injuries. The following reviews this issue in greater detail.
Less than 80% of students get below eight hours of sleep and more than 40% get 7 hours of sleep or less. Yet believe it or not 50% of parents disagree with the idea of school being later in the morning, even knowing the previous information. But, they think it will cut into co-curriculars, dinner time, and transportation issues.Dr. Nathaniel Watson, lead author of the AASM statement and professor of neurology at the University of Washington, says that “so far successful changes have been the result of parents, physician groups and concerned citizens raising the issue at school board meetings”.
These Dr.’s also want parents to enforce no electronics in the rooms during the night because, it keeps the kids up and delays there sleeping time.
Teenagers are also up because brains begin producing the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin on a delayed schedule, making it difficult for them to feel tired before 11 p.m. starting school later would allow time for teens to continue on the correct circadian rhythm, and let their natural melatonin increase at night. But sometimes they’re up late to just finish homework. Anyway they stay up it throws them off the next school day.
In conclusion “We all want the same thing: healthy, vibrant, educated children who have every opportunity possible to succeed in this world.” says Dr. Watson. Later school starts would benefit students health and happiness.

  12. A vape is something people use to get off of cigarettes. But when people start using vapes for no reason especially tweens and teens the effects start up. Vaping can cause numerous health issues especially for younger people. The problem is kids have started using them and they don’t even realize the effects! They say “i’m only doing it once so nothing can happen to me.” Before they know it, they have bubbles in their lungs and can’t stop their addiction! Vaping is bad for you.

First off, vaping causes impaired wound healing. Your body cells are constantly fighting off foreign substances. Most of the time, nothing bad will happen to your body. ”That’s because the body has a system in place to heal itself. Most major organs have special cells — fibroblasts (FY-broh-blasts) — that repair damaged or injured tissue.” Article 1. Fibroblasts are the reason your wounds heal when you cut yourself. Fibroblasts shrink and when they shrink it pulls your skin together which heals your wounds. “In the lab, Rahman and his colleagues grew lung fibroblasts in Petri dishes. Then they cut into the community of growing cells to mimic a wound. Afterward, they exposed the growing cells to e-cigarette vapors. As expected, the fibroblasts morphed into wound-healing cells. But, unexpectedly, they didn’t close up the cut. Curious, Rahman looked more closely at the cellular machinery. Some mitochondria had been destroyed. The fibroblasts simply had run out of the energy they needed before they could successfully squeeze the wound closed.” Article 1. As Rahman and his team proved vaping is bad for you.

Secondly, vaping causes vaper’s cough. When the body inhales pollution it hurts the lungs. And when those particles are breathed in regularly your body triggers a cough that won’t go away. Inhaling these particles after a while may cause bronchitis. When your symptoms to bronchitis don’t go away its called chronic. “McConnell’s team decided to look for signs of bronchitis in vaping teens. After all, he explains, “There are a lot of these irritants in e-cigarette vapor.” The researchers asked 2,000 students in the Los Angeles, Calif., area about their vaping habits. All were in their last two years of high school. The researchers also asked the teens about any respiratory symptoms. These could include coughs or phlegm” McConnel’s team found that there were teens with chronic that were vaping. McConnel’s team helped prove that vaping is bad for you.

  13. Thirdly, there are toxic metals and chemicals in the e-liquid. Scientists found a lot harmful chemicals in e-liquid. Even some that could cause cancer! Some of these are formaldehyde and acetaldehyde. Scientists have also found that considerably harmless liquids can be harmful once they are heated up. “The most concerning of these metals were nickel, chromium and manganese. The amounts of them varied between brands. All three metals occur naturally in rock formations all over the planet. Inside the body, though, they can cause trouble. Research suggests that nickel and certain forms of chromium may cause cancer. Manganese can harm the nervous system.” Article 1. This shows how the e-liquids can harm even if they say they are safe. How would you even know? Some liquids say they are completely harmless but before you know it you have cancer! Vaping is BAD for you.

Also, nicotine harms the brain. I think we all know how kids grow and their brain grows. When you vape while your brain is growing you can cause negative effects on your brain growth. “According to a 2014 study reported in the European Review of Medical Pharmacology, nicotine has a significant effect on brain neuroplasticity. The study concluded that young people who vape nicotine may have impaired brain development, poor achievement, and possibly lifelong nicotine addiction. Nicotine use during adolescence may damage capabilities connected with higher cognitive function and processing.” Article 2. This shows how vaping is bad for you and it can have many different negative effects. Vaping is bad for you.

Lastly, vaping may still cause cancer. Studies have shown that people exposed to nicotine vapor suffer comparable harm to people who smoke or are near cigarette smoke. At this time it is not certain that e-cigarettes actually cause cancer, but it does cause changes in DNA. What is clear is that vaping nicotine has health hazards that may approximate smoking, in spite of the lack of combustion and carbon passing through the lungs. This evidence helps further prove my claim that vaping is bad for you.

Overall, I believe vaping is bad for you. There are just too many bad things that can happen to you. Think of it, for all we know if you vape once it can make your life miserable. What would you want to do, vape, or have a happy life with no medical issues. I know I would rather have a happy life life with no medical issues. I guess some people don’t see it that way though. I encourage you if you have a friend of know someone that vapes tell them a few symptoms from my essay. Try to get them to stop. Vaping is BAD for you.

  14. The wildfires in California have been blazing through many places, leaving a huge amount of damage, and death tolls increasing extremely quickly. Eight fatalities have been reported from wildfires in Shasta County and by Yosemite National Park.
These wildfires have been increasing constantly and the firefighters have been risking their lives extremely often, and some have even putting the fires out for up to two weeks, (Mariposa County, Ferguson Fire) While some have even been injured or killed by falling trees, debris, and etc.

They have battling 17 wildfires in California, that have caused damage to mote than 200,000 acres combined. The Carr fire is the largest fire as of right now, which is currently burning, and has had a major impact on communities and even people.

All these fires have been caused by one thing...
    Humidity.
The temperatures have reached scolding points of 105 degrees, and usually higher. This is causing the sun to beat down on forests or buildings and blaze up. But because of the heat and humidity, they spread quickly and violently, destroying everything in contact.

I know that they are trying to put these wildfires out as soon as possible but I think they should create some system in California to help with the heat and prevent wildfires. They have brainstormed things like clearing potentially dangerous areas, and etc.

The Fire Department of many cities across California have been trying to put out all of these wildfires. "Firefighters are battling 17 wildfires across the state, which have consumed more than 200,000 acres combined in terrain stretching from Southern California to the Oregon border." (Article 1) These wildfires are everywhere, and the government is trying to come up with a plan. "Half a dozen experts, including scientists and regulators, presented a broad overview of the difficult path ahead." (Article 2)

In conclusion, the California wildfires have been blazing through the state, but firefighters and the government have been trying to prevent these, and are making plans for the long road ahead.

  15. With today's advanced technology and kids having everything at their fingertips. Kids can spend way to much time on devices. Did you know according to Common Sense Media parents say “59% of kids are addicted to there screens, while 66% say that their kids spend to much time on there screens.” So here are the reasons why I believe that kids should be limited to there screen time.

The amount of screen time young kids spend has increased a ton over the years. According to article 1 “Mobile media time for zero-to-eight year-olds has tripled between 2013 and 2017, from an average of 15 minutes per day to 48 minutes per day.” They also say that teens spend a average of 6 hours and 40 minutes on screens. Kids should be outside enjoying summer rather than being cooped up inside on there screens.

The side effects to too much screen time can be, sleep deprivation, Obesity, Vision problems, Aches and pains, Loss of social skills, and Aggression.(Article 2)

Sleep deprivation: This can cause loss of sleep for kids, but it affects young kids the most. Kids are supposed to get 10-12 hours of sleep but when sleep deprived kids can get between 6-8 hours of sleep. They then feel Tiredness and lazy and that makes you want to relax on your device.

Obesity: When ads are advertising junk food kids are tempted to eats those unhealthy things. Kids are full of energy which gives them the need to run and be active but when kids don't use that energy it can cause weight issues.

Vision problems: Too much time focused on a screen can hurt your eyes and cause pain or blurriness in your eyes.

Aches and pain: With your body hunched over a screen in that same position for hours, kids can experience pain and aches in their body. These problems can potentially lead to further problems.

Loss of social skills: When kids are on there screen rather than talking face to face with people, social skills can be lost and this can affect kids from becoming well rounded adults for their futures.

Aggression: When kids are asked their favorite games most of the time it involves violence. Kids are pulled towards the games with weapon and killing. Studies show that as a kid gets older their level of aggression will rise.

In conclusion I hope you now realize how sever spending to much time on a screen is and how much damage it can cause. So I hope next time when you turn on your screen you limit yourself to a certain amount of time. Thanks for reading!

  16. Self-Driving Cars - Are They Our Future?
Recently, while walking through Target’s parking lot in Auburn Hills, Michigan, I noticed something unusual - four front parking spots were painted red, numbered, and had a solar panel attached to the poll installed specifically for them. There was no doubt about it - this was the parking area for Tesla cars, the first self-driving automobiles. I certainly knew that this innovation is fast coming, but for the first time, it felt real. This made me wonder whether self-driving cars would really replace vehicles of today or will prove to be a bad idea. While there seems to be a lot of good thinking behind this innovation, I think that it will not be good for individuals because it will put too much control over them into hands of machines and those who know how to manipulate them.

First, self-driving cars will not be good for people because individuals will lose their privacy. According to article “Are self-Driving Cars a good Idea?”, with all the technology involved in a self-driving car, “it is possible to know exactly who is going where at any given moment.” Privacy is a given human right, and humans should have that privacy taken away for the sake of convenience.

Second, since the car is entirely under computer control, people who control computers will control other people. “The destination would be able to be overridden, which means the occupant of a car could literally be forced to go where someone else wanted. While this could be a good thing to subdue and capture criminals, it could also be a way to facilitate kidnappings and other nefarious acts.” (“Are self-Driving Cars a good Idea?”) This means that self-driving cars can potentially put people in the way of danger.

Third, computers can malfunction, which can cause thousands of deaths in seconds. Nothing ever works perfectly. If something happens to the system in the car or traffic network, it can lead to a huge disaster involving every self-driving car on the road. And this could never happen on such a large scale if humans controlled them.
Those who believe in self-driving cars, like the author of article “Why Self-Driving Cars Are a Good Idea,” state that “not only would traffic accidents be virtually eliminated, but fuel costs would be reduced. Self-driving cars using vehicle-to-vehicle technology as well as network capabilities would be able to anticipate and correct for traffic conditions, would be able to stop before an accident took place and, since the vehicle is under total computer control, would be optimized for maximum efficiency. Even people with physical impairments, vision problems and medical conditions could get in a car, and be taken wherever they wanted without endangering other people on the road.” Even though this might be good, this still doesn’t address the issues of privacy and computer malfunction.

I know that technology will change how we live and get from one place to another very soon. It is possible that we will see different types of transportation. I just don’t think that taking a person out of a driver’s seat and giving all of the control to robots is a good idea. It will reduce our privacy and might put us in dangerous situations.

    1. I agree with you because another reason is because some people like driving their cars, too. You can't take that away from people. Great job on providing different disadvantages and a counterargument. I'm just confused on the sentence Privacy is a given human right, and humans should have that privacy taken away for the sake of convenience. According to your side of the argument should would be replaced with shouldn't.

  17. Article one:http://mentalfloss.com/article/541158/scientific-reasons-you-should-read-more
    Article two:https://www.realsimple.com/health/preventative-health/benefits-of-reading-real-books

    People should read more.
Some people don’t like reading because they think it’s a waste of time and would rather spend their time doing something they think is more enjoyable, but what they don’t realize is how beneficial reading can be. Reading can make you smarter and you can know more by reading, but it can also benefit you by reducing stress, helping you keep your memory as you get older, and can even increase your lifespan. I think people should read more.

First of all, reading can reduce stress. Most people have a lot of stress especially for kids that are in school. Homework and big tests can cause a lot of stress, but taking some time off to read actually can reduce that stress. Article one says that the University of Sussex studied how different things affected stress and they found that reading for 6 minutes can lower stress by 68%. Stress is a big problem but can be easily solved by reading for a short period of time.

Also, reading can fight Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease is a disease that some people get as they get older and it makes you forget things. But article 2 says that, “those who who engage their brains through activities such as reading, chess, or puzzles could be 2.5 times less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than those who spend their down time on less stimulating activities.” Reading can improve your memory even when you have a lifetime full of memories. Reading can make your life easier as you get older by helping you keep your memory.

Lastly, reading can increase your lifespan. A lot of people wish their life was longer so they could do more things and go to more places. A easy solution to getting a longer life is reading. In article one it says, “A team at Yale University followed more than 3600 adults over the age of 50 for 12 years. They discovered that people who reported reading books for 30 minutes a day lived nearly two years longer than those who read magazines or newspapers.” Living a longer life can be as easy as reading for half an hour a day or even longer. It’s simple and fun and worth your while.

In conclusion, reading has many benefits. It can reduce stress, help you keep your memory, and increase your lifespan. Those are only a few reasons you should read, but there are many others. So get off your electronics and read a fun and enjoyable book.

  19. Essay by Anna Reineck

Can you speak another language? Maybe even two? Or, can you only speak english? If you are not able to communicate in another language, it's about time that you learn. Being bilingual has many benefits, like more job opportunities, more possible friendships, and a healthier brain. I think that learning another language would be a good improvement to the lives of people everywhere.

First of all, many jobs in the United States include communication with people who live in other places. Often, those people do not speak the same language. “The job market is much stronger for individuals who speak other languages”(Foreign Language Study Should Be Mandatory). Some jobs require the ability to speak in multiple languages. It is difficult to learn how to speak fluently in another language, but it pays off if you find a job because of it. Speaking another language gives you more job options.

Secondly, many people in the world speak a language other than english. Being able to talk and communicate with all those people gives you a chance to make friends and relationships that you would not have been able to make without speaking that language. In the article 15 Reasons for Kids to Learn a Foreign Language, it says “you have a lifetime to benefit from cross-cultural friendships”. This is very true, one of your closest friends could be behind the language barrier that separates you. Learning another language brings the opportunity of meeting new people.

Lastly, studies show that knowing multiple languages is good for your brain. Learning new languages is a difficult task, but your brain benefits from doing it. “Bilingual individuals have denser grey matter compared to their monolingual counterparts.” (Brain Benefits of Bilingualism). Gray matter is a part of your brain that allows ideas to flow, it is a very important part of your brain. Speaking more than one language makes that part of your brain healthier.

In conclusion, knowing a foreign language is good for you. From job opportunities to improving your brain and getting new friends. The only question left is which language will you learn?

  20. Essay by Daniel Blaine

    Article 1: http://espn.com/
    Article 2: https://phys.org/news/2017-01-european-soccer-increasingly-popular-usa.html

The worlds soccer love is the greatest love of a sport. Meanwhile The US is thriving in football while soccer is a little known subject in the US. This needs to change, we need to help the growth of soccer in the US. This beautiful game has grown everywhere but the US. Some ways to do this is get World soccer into the US. Secondly, US National Soccer teams need to show what the US is made of. Lastly, For people to understand this game shares the same great plays as the other US sports.

First off, European Soccer is so invested in the beautiful sport. For Example, According to ESPN.com “Iceland’s National Team made it to the world cup for the first time, 99.6% of their population was watching their experience in the world cup”. The other 0.4% was the players playing the Game. The US needs support like this so the National team feel like they got support from the fans. This summer Michigan will be hosting a english soccer game at the Big House between Liverpool and Manchester United arguably to of the best teams.. This could the growth of soccer when see to great teams go head to head with made up plays that just work without even thinking. In the world The US got the rights to co-host the world cup with Mexico and Canada, this should drive a lot of fans to truly experience the game of soccer with also the support of fans US National Team.

Secondly, this year for the 2018 Men’s world cup, the US National Team failed to qualify. Which is good news for Mark Abbott and MLS so they don’t lose to many players. But bad news for US Soccer, The fans don’t see success in America and quit on soccer cause we are not good enough. What the fans want to see is success so the growth of soccer in the US can succeed. On the other hand, the other hand US women's soccer is succeeding in world cup and other tournaments which might turn the tide on women's rights and the growth of soccer. According to a Tbunjen University study “ fans would rather watch international soccer rather than the MLS” So where is the US in these International games?

Lastly, soccer is full of beautiful plays just like football and baseball. Some plays are like Odell Beckham's one handed catch which might grab people's attention. Some of the better plays are Cristiano Ronaldo's Levitating backward kick called the bicycle kick. This play probably shocked more people than Beckham’s catch. But football you only see these type of plays once in a while. In soccer you see these great plays almost every match from a variety of players, that’s how good the game of soccer is.

In conclusion, I think soccer should be the sport of the world with US joining in to this sport that is a piece of art. This is not of the many reasons You should love the game of soccer. Lets go join in on the world's sport.

  21. Homework is a daily thing. It should usually take about 45 min.-1h, right? No! I think The amount of daily homework a child receives should be reduced. Too much homework can lead to stress, not enough sleep, and missing out on life opportunities. Too much homework is bad for you.

Some teachers think that homework is good for the mind, but too much can be quite harmful. As stated on Pages by Page, " Extra assignments given to children can lead to unhealthy levels of stress." Which could lead to bad habits like chewing your fingernails. Some people leave their homework for right before they go to bed, so they have to get it done quickly. If its a lot of homework, it would really stress someone out.

Not getting enough sleep is a big one these days. Parents usually blame it on electronics, or even friends, but homework too? Picture this. You've got lots of homework and you have to prepare for a test. But your homework took too long and was way too hard for you. You stayed up really late trying to finish it and forgot about your test. Not only will you not get enough sleep, but there is a good chance you will fail the test because you didn't prepare. Having too much homework can make you not get enough sleep that leads to lots of problems.

Having too much homework causes you to miss out on life opportunities. For example, if a fun carnival event is happening, some children wouldn't be able to go because of their piles of homework. In the article, “Why You Should Give Way Less Homework” on Teach4theHeart, it states that “There are definitely families out there who want to relax together in the evening but simply cannot do so because the kids are entrenched with homework.” I agree because I have been in the situation too. I wanted to go to a festival in a nearby town by i could not go due to my homework. Kids could miss out on lots of great opportunities in life.

Homework is good but it can definitely also be bad. I can lead to things like unhealthy levels of stress, not enough sleep, or even missing out on amazing opportunities in life. I know I have felt like I've had way too much homework. Have You?

  23. You probably did not take into account how expensive wildfires are. Wildfires are deadly. The forest service spent more than 1 million dollars in countries with small firers. Wildfires put many people out of jobs. The fires burn and destroy many houses and building, therefore many towns that run on tourism, have little or no money coming in. Also, the fire can destroy lots of property and can cost millions of dollars to repair.

I believe that wildfires have a extreme impact on the economy. First they take many people out of work for long periods of time which affects the economy because no work means no money made. Fires destroy houses and building which can cost millions to repair which is bad for the economy because you have to fix all the building which cost money. So if the town is destroyed no one comes to the town, and if no one comes to the town no money is coming in which is bad for the economy.

Did you know that a recent wildfire in Durango, Colorado burned 54,000 acres of land. The “Durango Herald” article stated that the fire cost thousands of dollars because people had to evacuate which had a dramatic toll on the city because people were taken out of their jobs. The “fire today” article claims that one fire in the u.s. (Cold Springs Fire) cost 14 million dollars in total for repairs. Imagine how much a fire cost if 14 millions dollars is only repairs. The “Fire Today” article says that tourism is most affect in the months following the fire, which is vital to the wellbeing of a community economy.

In conclusion wildfire definitely affect the economy in so many ways. The ones I discussed are only 3 very important ones. Wildfires can take people out of work, can destroy houses and buildings, and stop tourists from coming to the town. But you can help these towns for example Colorado and California are experiencing wildfires at the moment and you can help by donating to the national forest service to help them fight the fire.

  26. Homework is the one thing that every student dreads. From the time the school day starts to ends there is always some type of homework to worry about. Homework is a good way to keep your mind thinking after school, but why do we have it on weekends? Weekends are a time for students to relax, but no, you have more homework. Should students have homework over the weekends?

Homework is good exercise for students after school but should not be assigned on weekends. Students are given weekends to relax, or do sports, or something other than school yet we have no time to do those things when we have a big project due on Monday. As a student I have learned that we have a life outside of school that we love, but school just gets in the way. Whenever a student travels in the car or on the plane they are forced to do homework. Trust me, I do that all the time. Why do that when you could take a nap or enjoy your life outside of school?

Homework has been stressful and time consuming for kids weather they are in grade school or high school so why give them even more on the weekends? The article, "Some Schools Are Cutting Back on Homework" on Los Angeles Times, shows how homework is raking up all students time from dinner, to sleep, to playtime, to vacations. Also in the article, "20 Reasons to Stop Assigning Homework Over the Holidays" on informEd, it suggests that kids need time to be kids. Homework blocks so many activities outside of school that we can't have time to be kids and do fun things.

Weekends are the times that kids should be having fun outside or playing with friends instead of being inside doing homework. As kids, the last thing we want to do is homework when we could be having fun. Homework should never be assigned on weekends.

  28. The Villanova Basketball Team won the NCAA national championship this year. Jalen Brunson was one of their starting guards. Winning the championship wasn't easy. Jalen had to spend late nights putting up shots in the gym, working out, going on long runs, and practicing nonstop. With all that time and commitment that Brunson put in, he didn't make a single penny. While the coaches sit on the bench and make tens of thousands of dollars, the players are out on the court putting in the real work and are making no money. college athletes should be paid. Some of them need the money, They deserve some of the money, and they start learning about money early.

Most college athletes need the money that the University would pay them. Most college athletes aren't employed since most of their time is spent practicing and playing in games. Since they have no form of income, they have to use their own money and what they can find to pay for things like clothes, food, class equipment, movies, sporting events, etc. If they could get money from the college, they could buy and do more of the things listed above. Another reason why they need the money is that some colleges don't pay for athletes hospital bills when they get injured in a game. They rely on the student athletes to pay for their own medical bills, which isn't always possible. This is one reason why college athletes should be paid.

My second reason is that the Athletes deserve some of the money. In 2011 the NCAA made a deal with CBS/turner sports to show march madness from 2011 to 2024 for 11 billion dollars. With all of the money that the NCAA is raking in, They should give some of it to the players. If they are making that much for one month they should share it a little bit. Another reason is that The players are doing most of the work, while the money is going to the coaches. Don't get me wrong, the coaches call the plays and do the scouting and other important things, but the players are doing the actual playing and working hard so that they can win more. The coaches just get the money that comes out of that hard work. A third reason is that they might need the money to help support their family's. If they come from poor areas they could use the money to help their family. some baby's are even born during the time that their parents are in college. They will need to pay for a daycare or babysitting service. If they don't make any money then they can't pay for their family. The players deserve that money.

My third reason why college athletes should be paid is that they start learning about money early. An ESPN documentary revealed that 60% of NBA players become broke after 5 years into retirement. It's because they buy a whole bunch of cars, boats, houses, Electronics, and other things. If they learned how to be financially smarter earlier in life, like in college, they could've saved their money and spent it on needs instead of wants. Another reason is that they could use the money to pay a financial advisor. The financial advisor could help manage the money so that they won't waste it later in life.

College athletes work hard and sacrifice lots of time for their sport. They should get paid something. Some need the money, some of them deserve the money, and the income could be used to help them learn about money. That is 3 reasons why college athletes should be paid. I hope you agree that college athletes should be paid.

    1. I love this topic! I do agree that college athletes work very hard and sacrifice time for what they do, at the same time I partially disagree. i think that most people's attention is centered on the players while the coaches also sacrifice time. the coaches teach the players and help them out. Although they do not play on the court it is the coaches job and thats why they receive pay. some athletes are granted scholarships for there skill and that decreases what they pay for school. lastly when players play for college teams they know that there not getting payed and they do it because they are passionate about it. if they pay athletes then people might try to get in when its not what they should be doing. don't get me wrong I love this reasoning , i just have some different thoughts.

  30. Most kids have heard that they should be exercising for sixty minutes everyday. Sadly, only 15% of kids do. Running is one of the best forms of exercise, it has many mental health, physical health, and social benefits. I believe that every child should run, do you?
One reason that kids should run is that running improves mental health. Many kids experience what is called “Runner’s High”, an adrenaline rush occuring before and after runs. This has been shown to boost confidence and give a sense of accomplishment. If you have a test coming up, go for a run the night before or the morning of because running can actually alleviate stress and anxiety better than medication. Another ‘Brain Benefit’ to running is that it increases the amount of brain cells that your body produces in an hour. This causes you to have a sharper memory, have better learning abilities, and increase creativity. If not for anything else, run for your brain.
Not only does running have mental health benefits, but physical benefits too! Running can help teens and young adults a lot by preventing pimples, blackheads, and acne. The pores produce sweat and the sweat flushes out all of the toxins, leaving you with great skin. Running can also positively affect the longevity of your life. Aerobic exercise increases your lung capacity and help you breathe better, allowing a longer life. Along with increasing lung capacity, bone and joint health can better your chances of a long life. Don’t just run for your brain, run for your body.
As you can run anywhere, you can run with anyone. Having people to run with is great motivation. The Sashabaw Middle School Cross Country team is perfect if you want to run with your friends and not have to plan a time to get together. If you don’t like to run with a lot of people just grab a couple of your friends and do a fun jog. Maybe you could even join a local running group. Clarkston and surrounding cities have plenty of places and groups to run with. As a runner I prefer running with people than not, the other person is a great source of encouragement. Running is a fantastic way to make new friends or to meet up with old ones.
In conclusion, children need to exercise and running is the perfect way. Running lengthens your life, relaxes your mind, and gives you a chance to see your friends. After all, kids have every reason to run, so why not.

  32. Kids Can Lower Their Risk Of Getting Type 2 Diabetes Part One

Type 2 diabetes is a disease that is getting more and more common in the world today. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes. The other kind is type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is when the immune system attacks the pancreas and destroys the cells that make insulin. Type 1 diabetes usually starts in childhood, but can occur in adults. Type 2 diabetes is when the pancreas can still make insulin, but the body doesn’t respond to it properly. Genetics as well as poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle add to an increased risk of getting type 2 diabetes.Type 2 diabetes usually occurs in adults but more and more children are starting to get it. Type 2 diabetes can cause serious health problems including heart disease, stroke, and eye and foot problems if not cared for. If you don’t take care of diabetes, you could die from it. That is why it is so important to keep yourself active and eat healthy. Acquiring healthy habits early in life makes it easier to practice those habits throughout your entire life. Therefore, young people should be active and eat healthier to help prevent type 2 diabetes.

If you don’t take care of type 2 diabetes, it can lead to additional complications. “Out of control blood sugar levels can lead to short term problems like hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, or diabetic ketoacidosis.” (https://kidshealth.org) Ultimately, out of control diabetes can lead to death. I had a grandpa who had type 2 diabetes for some time but was not taking care of it properly. These problems lead to him falling and breaking his hip and going to the hospital. Because of him being overweight and lots of other problems, it finally lead to his death. However, he could have managed his diabetes if he was more active and kept his weight under control. It is so important that you do those things because it could be a life saver.

  33. Kids Can Lower Their Risk Of Getting Type 2 Diabetes Part Two

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases has given us three ways to prevent type 2 diabetes. (https://www.niddk.nih.gov) The first way is to “Lose weight and keep it off.” You may be able to delay or prevent diabetes by losing 5 to 7% from your original weight. A small goal like this can really help you with type two diabetes. The second way is to “Move more.” The article suggests that you get at least 30 minutes of physical activity 5 days a week. Start slowly building your way up to your goal. The third way is to “Eat healthy foods most of the time.” Eat smaller portions to reduce the amount of calories you eat each day to help you lose weight. Choosing foods with less fat is another way to reduce calories. Drink water, not sweetened beverages. It is also important especially for young kids to keep the healthy habits going so they stay active their whole life. A research shows that almost all people who lose weight will regain it again. “For example, research has indicated that 97% of people who lose weight will regain it all within 5 years.” (https://www.psychologytoday.com) This is why it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle early in your life so you don’t have to develop it when you’re older.

Finally, it is important to to be tested for diabetes if you have risk factors such as family history, heart disease and high blood pressure or you have symptoms of diabetes. “Testing also allows health care professionals to find prediabetes.” (https://www.niddk.nih.gov) If you do need to be tested, make sure it is earlier so professionals can find diabetes sooner so they can work with the patients. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases has recommended the routine testing for type 2 diabetes. You should be tested if you are or over the age of 45, or between the age of 19 and 44 and are overweight or obese, and have one or more other diabetes risk factors. You should also be tested if you are a woman with gestational diabetes. Getting tested early can help you manage type 2 diabetes if you happen to have it.

In conclusion, young people should be more active and eat healthier to help prevent type 2 diabetes. Diabetes can limit you in doing a lot in life. It is best if you exercise and eat healthy foods your whole life because more and more kids are becoming overweight and diabetes is turning into a real life problem. The earlier you start eating healthier and being more active, the better chance you will have of limiting yourself of getting type 2 diabetes. And that is a good lesson for kids to know because if they have healthy eating habits and stay active, it will turn into a good, long life.

  34. I like how you explained the different types of diabetes because I didn't know how they worked. Great job!
Another reason kids don't eat healthier is because eating healthier is more expensive. So schools should provide healthier foods for kids. On the lunch calendar, every Monday it wrote"pizza and cooked carrots" but they gave us greasy tater tots every time. Also, a few times during the school year the staff would advise students to eat a fruit/vegetable but there was hardly much left in the produce case.

  35. Animal abuse is happening all over the world, especially in slaughterhouses. For example, many pigs and chickens are beaten and bruised even before they are killed. In these situations, “factory farmed pigs are sent to slaughter after just six months of life. In order to get the terrified pigs onto the trucks bound for the slaughterhouse, workers may beat them on their sensitive noses and backs or stick electric prods into their rectums” (Peta). The reason why they do this is so the animals don’t fight back and they think if they hurt the animals and make the animals fear them, that the animals will cooperate. Some chickens are bred to grow fast in order to speed up the process for becoming a meat source, but in the process sometimes they are crippled under their weight. (“Glass Walls” Paul Mccartney). Slaughterhouses and breeding programs should be more humane and treat the animals better, and stop all the abuse and brutal killings.
In my opinion, I think most slaughterhouses should be stopped. They are abusing animals even before they get there. For example, on chicken farms they are bred in small pens and those pens aren’t even cleaned. Also, they whip the animals and chain them up. They do this because there is little space, but many animals are just scared, and they punish the ones that act up. Treating animals this way is unacceptable and cruel, and not needed.
Most animals are really intelligent, but many of them go insane because of all the stress, and beatings. “Every year in Australia, 520-620 million animals are killed at abattoirs (Slaughterhouses), mostly for meat” (Aussie Abattoirs). Breeding sows are often given small cage like areas to give birth in, and they can barely move, creating poor conditions for the animals and adding stress to the mom and baby. Millions of piglets are killed by a method called “thumping”, where they grab them by the legs and hit them against the ground. Slaughterhouses think this is “more than acceptable” in their handling of animals, but I don’t think this is necessary and is cruel and unacceptable. (“Glass Walls”).
This abuse needs to be stopped. As it says in Glass Walls by Paul Mccartney “if slaughterhouses had glass walls we would all be vegetarian.” Therefore, it is important to expose the cruel actions and poor animal treatment that goes on at slaughterhouses so that more people are aware of the abuse. Once people are aware of the poor treatment and can see the abuse for themselves, than we can start to try and change the actions at these types of places to prevent more unacceptable behavior towards these animals.
I believe because of animal cruelty, most slaughterhouses should be shut down for this kind of behavior. The animals didn’t do anything to deserve this treatment and we can get our food from other places that treat animals more humanely. If we could shut down all the slaughterhouses performing animal abuse, than we could eliminate the poor treatment of these animals.

They have souls, too and should be able to live a long happy life before we eat them, and we should use our limited resources efficiently (not wasting food or overeating). Great job expressing you opinions Kaitlyn!

  36. If you’ve ever been to a big city you’ve probably seen a homeless person. Some of the many reasons people can become homeless can be because of job loss or an unexpected death in their family. They could also have been in foster care. Sometimes when kids get out of foster care they don’t have a good enough job and then can’t pay for an apartment, they also might not have the education for a better job. They might not have the money, or the means to access schools to get a better education.

I think people should do more to help the homeless. A big problem for the homeless is that they most likely can’t get a job, or the job doesn’t pay enough. So that means they don’t have the money for a house or apartment, because they don’t have a house or apartment they don’t have access to a private bathroom with a shower. Because they don’t have many places to clean up, the only places being public restrooms, unless they buy something. Public restrooms are not the best so, they might not look as nice and probably have a lower chance of getting a job or better job. They also might not have the education for a different job that might pay more. It just goes in a giant circle, no money and no way to make enough money. Another problem is the fact that there are not enough apartments for the people that need them. The apartment costs have gone up in most places and so there are not enough for the people who need them for a lower cost.

Some of the ways people are helping the homeless are by supporting an organization such as Burners Without Borders where people work to help the community as a whole and that includes the homeless. Or there are other ways, one suggestion would be giving time or small things, not money. So instead of giving them some money you could talk to them, or give them something such as, food, water, or objects like socks. If they don’t accept, then they don’t need it.

Chris Casteel, the owner of Anew Life Prosthetics and Orthotics in Detroit, volunteers for Burners Without Borders. Chis and other volunteers work to fill new backpacks with things such as socks, water, small bits of food, hand warmers and maybe a five dollar gift card to a restaurant, such as McDonalds. The gift card can get them a small meal or drink and allows them to use the restroom because they are then a customer. They give these bags to the homeless during the winter.

In conclusion, the homeless can be people just like us, and you’ll never know what they can do if we don’t help them get off the streets. Lots of people just walk past without thinking about how they can help, or that they can’t. But, if people work together we can help even just helping one person can make a difference. Just doing something small like a small family in Chicago that had purchased a large box of popsicles, it was a hot day. As they were walking away from the store and passed some homeless people they gave them popsicles. This small act of kindness showed that just something small can help.

  38. Mass Shootings
    By: Abby Brumbaugh
Mass shootings. You get a tingly feeling just hearing or seeing those two words. But why? The United States of America has had too many mass shootings in the last six years, I don’t know where to begin. You probably didn’t know that recently there was a shooting on August 10, 2018, that happened right here in Detroit, Michigan. The shooting injured four. Why is this the world we live in? Kids that find out that there was a mass shooting at a school get scared that it might happen to them. Even if the shooting was across the country. What makes people want to go out and just kill anyone they see? Is that how we want to live? No. Mass shootings are a big problem.
The first reason mass shootings are a big problem is people can just go out and buy guns. Now, there are some requirements for buying a gun. For example, from Wikipedia, they said “Purchasing firearms. At the age of 18 or up, it is legal to buy a pistol with a purchase license from a private seller, at the age of 21, it is legal to buy a firearm from a Federally licensed (FFL) dealer. No purchase license is required to purchase a longgun (a firearm that is more than 26 inches long) in Michigan” So we have some requirements to buy a gun, but it isn’t very protective especially with longguns. Michigan is though more protective than some states. Take Florida for example, from the website How Easy It Is To Get A Gun- Florida they said “The Florida Department of Law Enforcement also says the state does not require a specialized permit to buy a firearm, including rifles and shotguns. To buy a gun in Florida, buyers must be 18 for a rifle or 21 for a handgun. They do not need a permit and are not fingerprinted.” Florida does not require as much protection or reason for buying a gun. This makes it more possible to have more mass shootings. From USA Today, you see the listing of which states have a higher shooting rate. Michigan comes in at number 27 and Florida comes in at number 26. Michigan has more protection when buying a gun so that makes a difference with who has a higher rate or not. If we put more laws or protection in buying guns that would most likely make mass shootings less of a problem.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Part 2
The second reason mass shootings are a big problem is they make people scared. A mass shooting could happen anywhere at any time and you could be there. From the article the Washington Post The Terrible Numbers That Grow With Each Mass Shooting they said “Public mass shootings account for a tiny fraction of the country’s gun deaths, but they are uniquely terrifying because they occur without warning in the most mundane places. Most of the victims are chosen not for what they have done but simply for where they happen to be.” So you could be a victim just because you were in the wrong place at the wrong time. That makes a lot of people scared. Texas Monthly’s Pamela Colloff wrote, the shooting “ushered in the notion that any group of people, anywhere — even walking around a university campus on a summer day — could be killed at random by a stranger.” Kids also wonder if it it’s going to happen to their school. In the article The New York Times A Mass Shooting Generation Cries Out For Change they say “ With friends, they wondered darkly whether it could happen at their own school, and who might do it.” This makes the kids and parents/adults scared that their kids wonder about that. The New York Times interviewed David Hogg, a 17-year-old student journalist after the Parkland, FL shooting. He took some videos during the shooting, they asked him about those and he said “I recorded those videos because I didn’t know if I was going to survive,” he said in an interview here. “But I knew that if those videos survived, they would echo on and tell the story. And that story would be one that would change things, I hoped. And that would be my legacy.” People are scared of the mass shootings happening. This makes mass shootings a big problem.
Another reason that Mass Shootings are a big problem is the number of deaths and injuries is way too high. The number of deaths and injuries should be zero. If we look at one of the titles of the articles I used it’s called The Washington Post The Terrible Numbers That Grow With Each Mass Shooting. In a title of an article it tells us how bad the numbers grow as more people are getting killed and/or injured by shooters. Also from the Washington Post, they said “It looks at the 154 shootings in which four or more people were killed by a lone shooter (two shooters in a few cases).” Why do the numbers keep growing? The total number of deaths from all the Mass Shootings we have had is 1,102! 1,102 innocent people were killed for no apparent reason. Washington post also said “Their ages range from the unborn to the elderly; 185 were children and teenagers. In addition, thousands of survivors were left with devastating injuries, shattered families and psychological scars.” So you have a total number of 1,102 people killed, 185 of those people were children and teenagers, and you have who know how many people injured, with shattered families, and with psychological scars. If this doesn't show that mass shootings are a big problem, I don’t know what will.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Part 3
So why is Mass Shootings such a big problem in the United States Of America? Because people just do horrible things. But that doesn’t mean we can’t protect everyone else by putting more laws or protect on buying guns. And by putting more laws on buying guns people would be less scared of mass shootings happening to them. Also, by putting more laws on buying guns the numbers would go down on shootings. Now you know that mass shootings are a bigger problem than you thought, so go out there and tell people. Try to see if you can solve this problem that this country faces see what you can do. Quoted from DaShanne Stokes “Violence isn't a Democrat or Republican problem. It's an American problem, requiring an American solution.”

  43. ALA Research Response Part 1

Should scientists be allowed to test products
intended for human use on animals?

Many animals in our world are being forced through tests that can sicken, kill, torture, or just be plain evil to. Dosomething.org says that “Over 100 million animals are burned, crippled, poisoned, and abused in US labs every year.” and according to the Humane Society, registration of a single pesticide requires more than 50 experiments and the use of as many as 12,000 animals! Animal testing has contributed to many life saving medicines though, Many animals like mice, chimpanzees, and guinea pigs have a 95% or higher DNA Match. What do you think? I believe that commercial and cosmetic testing should be banned on animals in the USA.

Sure, many life saving medicines have come from animal testing, but half of the time spent testing and torturing animals is just for a companies profit. Some of the best companies can manage without animal testing, like Aveda, Trader Joe's, Bath And Body Works, ELF, and many more.

Even though animals share lots of DNA with humans, they can poorly compare in medicine properties. The anatomic, metabolic, and cellular differences between animals and people make animals poor models for human beings. Paul Furlong, Professor of Clinical Neuroimaging at Aston University (UK), states.

Did you know that 94% of drugs tested by animals are defective on human's? Some medicines like aspirin are good for human's but lethal to cats. Along with the 1950s sleeping pill thalidomide, which caused 10,000 babies to be born with severe deformities, was tested on animals prior to its commercial release. Later tests on pregnant mice, rats, guinea pigs, cats, and hamsters did not result in birth defects unless the drug was administered at extremely high doses. Animal tests on the arthritis drug Vioxx showed that it had a protective effect on the hearts of mice, yet the drug went on to cause more than 27,000 heart attacks and sudden cardiac deaths before being pulled from the market. This just shows furthermore why Animals should not be used for testing, it can be defective!

    ReplyDelete
  44. ALA Research Response Part 2

Animal tests are more expensive than alternative methods and are a waste of government research dollars. Humane Society International compared a variety of animal tests with their in vitro counterparts and found animal tests were more expensive in every scenario studied. Biotechnology company Empiriko invented synthetic livers which can predict the liver's metabolic reactions to drugs in a process that is quicker, cheaper, and more accurate than animal testing; in one trial it provided a level of specificity which previously would have required testing on 1,000 rats and 100 dogs.
According to Senator Jeff Flake's "Wastebook" of government funding, over $7.3 million of taxpayers' money was wasted on studies involving animals in 2016. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) found $56.4 million of government funds spent on animal experiments that, despite running over many years, failed to provide any useful results.

Medical breakthroughs involving animal research may still have been made without the use of animals. There is no evidence that animal experiments were essential in making major medical advances, and if enough money and resources were devoted to animal-free alternatives, other solutions would be found. Humane Research Australia (HRA) reports that many discoveries made by non-animal methods were later verified by animal experiments, "giving false credit" to animal use. For example, HRA notes, "Ovarian function was demonstrated by physician Dr. Robert.T. Morris in 1895 in surgical procedures on women, yet history credits the discovery to Emil Knauer who reproduced the procedure in rabbits in 1896... [and] Banting and Best are often cited as having discovered insulin through animal experiments in 1922. However... the discovery of insulin dates back to 1788 when an English physician, Thomas Cawley, performed an autopsy on a diabetic."

In Conclusion, I believe that animals should not be used for cosmetic and commercial testing of products intended for human use. Because of, Animals DNA may match close to human's but can poorly deliver correct results, 94% of drugs tested on animals were defective, Animal testings are more expensive than alternate options, and medical breakthroughs could have happened without the use of animal testing. This is my belief and you may choose yours.

    1. This is a tough topic because it could go either way. I agree with you now because of the difference in DNA, a mouse's system does not compare to a human's so you will not get accurate results. I think 4 reasons is enough for scientists to stop testing products on other innocent animals.

  46. Water Pollution
Many people don’t realize it but water pollution is a big problem. Water pollution is when chemicals, oils, trash, and other waste contaminate bodies of water. This can cause many problems not only for fish but for other animals, humans, and the Earth in general. Luckily, there are some solutions to water pollution. People should help pitch in to save our planet.
Most water pollution isn’t caused by the water. Oil pollution is one of the worst causes. Oil pollution is one of the most known causes of water pollution. Most people think of oil pollution to be from accidental oil spills. However, “only 12 percent of the oil that enters the oceans comes from tanker accidents; over 70 percent of oil pollution at sea comes from routine shipping and from the oil people pour down drains on land” (explainthatstuff.com). No one realizes it but humans cause a lot of the oil pollution, not just oil wells. The most common thing to wash up onto the beach is plastics. Lots of plastic is dumped into large bodies of water at landfills. Plastic is also a major part of water pollution because of us humans littering. Water pollution isn’t all caused by humans, some of the causes are completely natural. “Sometimes water pollution can occur through natural causes like volcanoes, algae blooms, animal waste, and silt from storms and floods” (ducksters.com). Most natural causes are from natural disasters, animals, and other types of pollution.
Sadly, there are awful effects of the polluted water. It sounds completely impossible but fish can actually suffocate from being in the contaminated water. The polluted water can run out of oxygen, which fish need in order to live. Water creatures aren’t the only things that are suffering from this dirtiness, land living animals can die from the contamination. Animals’ brains tell them to drink water in order to live, like ours do. Therefore, the animals drink that water not knowing it’s bad for them and die from the contamilation. Water pollution can even mess up the entire food chain! With all these animals dying, other creatures such as humans will have nothing to eat eventually which will cause all of the food chain to die making nothing left of the world but a lifeless planet.
Thankfully there are ways we can slow down and possibly stop all water pollution. Many easy ways to help with water pollution can be done right from home! One way to lessen chemicals from getting into the water is by not using weed killer. Pulling the weeds is a small thing to do however it can make a huge impact. An obvious but very impactful solution is saving water. Taking shorter showers, making sure the toilet isn’t running, and turning off the faucet when its not needed on are all easy ways to help save the Earth. Also a simple fix is telling other people about water pollution and the solutions that they can do to help. We could help the world live longer by doing these simple things!
In conclusion, we could help save the Earth by stopping the awful water pollution. There are many causes from nature, us humans, and other creatures. There are awful effects that are making an impact on the entire planet. Fortuitously, there are simple and easy things we can do to help save our planet. Don’t you think it’s worth saving?

  48. This summer there was a tragedy in Thailand, a small soccer team of young boys and their coach were trapped in a cave. The soccer team was touring the cave while a rainstorm hit. The cave flooded and trapped the team, almost killing them all. This is why we need to pay more attention to the dangers of touring caves.

If we don’t pay more attention to the dangers of cave touring next time something like this happens there could be more deaths. These boys were very fortunate that they survived this but there have been other times that people were not as fortunate. On August 6th 2006 2 cave divers had died and 3 were injured while diving in caves in Norway, they had suffered from decompression sickness. There have been many other cave tragedies because people don’t think about the dangers of caves.

There is only one huge reason why we should be more cautious about cave touring, It's so we avoid deaths and injuries. If you plan on cave touring consider the following. Is it going to rain that day, if so the cave could possibly flood and you could get trapped like the kids in Thailand. Also do you know your way around the cave, if not you may get lost. One time a father and his sons lost their way around a cave and were stuck in there for 5 days on the verge of death.

In conclusion, Cave touring isn’t always dangerous we just need to be more cautious about when we do it and make sure we are safe at all times. If we are not more cautious more tragedies like the one in Thailand could occur, but next time people could lose their lives. No one wants that so lets avoid it and be more cautious next time.

    Link 2: https://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/2016/05/yellowstone-national-parks-part-1/

Have you ever seen someone feeding a wild animal or even trying to pet one? You may not have realized, but either one of those actions could lead to danger of yourself and the animal. I believe that people should let wild animals be wild for their safety and yours.

Look, don’t touch. Sometimes wild animals look all fuzzy and cute and some people just have the urge to touch them. But that doesn’t mean you should. In Link 1 there was a situation where a group of people came across a baby bison in Yellowstone National Park. The people thought that the bison calf was lost and in distress. So the people took the calf and put it in their car. They took him to the nearest park ranger office. But did they really think about what would happen to the calf once they touched it? The rangers tried to release the calf back into the wild but the calf’s family did not recognize the calf’s scent so they would not let it back in. The rangers tried again and again but the same thing happened. According to Charissa Reid, a public affairs specialist with Yellowstone, “it seemed to be very imprinted on people rather than on bison.” Soon the bison became dangerous to people by continually going in the road so they had to put the bison down. This bison’s death could have been avoided if those people left the bison calf be wild in its habitat.

Once a person touches a wild animal the animal loses its scent. This is bad because the only way a mother can tell which baby is hers is by scent. Usually all animals of the same species look similar so the mothers can’t tell their baby apart from other babies by look. Once the baby is born the mother covers the baby in her scent. Once a person touches the wild animal the animal loses its scent. Even if the baby goes back to the mother it will get rejected because the person who touched the animal rubbed his/her scent on the animal and the mother will not recognize the scent.

Do not approach wild animals. In Link 2, 63 year old Lance Crosby was killed, eaten and covered in August 2015 up by a mother grizzly bear with two cubs in Yellowstone National Park. Crosby was traveling a path and did not have bear spray on him. After this encounter, the bear was tracked down and killed even though she was protecting her cubs, “on grounds that an adult grizzly bear that has eaten human flesh and cached a body is too dangerous to be spared, even if the fatal encounter wasn’t her fault.”

Two other deaths happened in Yellowstone in the summer of 2011 because of a female grizzly bear. As in the previous example, rangers believe the first man was killed because he ran into a mother grizzly with her cubs. The rangers decided not to kill her because they thought she was just trying to protect her cubs. Then the body of another man was found partially eaten and buried near where the mother grizzly lived, so they had to kill her. There wasn’t proof the same bear killed the second man, but the evidence “strongly suggested that she had at least fed on the body, and so she was put down.”

Think before you act. The national parks are the wild animals’ home. Wild animals are getting killed in their own habitat that wouldn’t have to simply because some people are harassing and getting too close to them. Would you walk into the house of someone you don’t know because you saw something interesting and wanted to get a better look? If you see a wild animal that looks cute, don’t approach it. Even if you want a good picture, don’t get closer. It’s not worth it to risk your life. So for your safety and the safety of the wild animals, keep a safe distance and remember one of the Leave No Trace principles: Respect wildlife.

  50. Should sports betting be legal
    ALA summer research topic
    By: Avery Pummill
Recently the supreme court has reversed a 26 year old law and is causing some interesting discussion about the topic. Sports betting. Many people think that sports betting should be legal and were pushing for it to become legal. But does the law even matter anymore, the sports gambling business was already a multi billion dollar industry. Even then the law states that it is up to the state to make it legal or not. I believe that sports betting should not be legal, and in the following article I hope you will too.
One of the following reason that I believe that sports betting should be legal is that it will make more money for the state. My evidence come from The Perspective and states, “Researchers estimate that legalized, regulated sports betting could actually bring in a total of $6 billion in annual revenue for states by 2023.” 6 billion dollars is a lot of money that can be spent on things such as schools or libraries. My next reason also comes from The perspective and states, “Sports betting is good for the economy. Legalizing sports betting will obviously create huge state tax revenues. More importantly, it has the potential to create jobs (estimated between 125,000-152,000 jobs) for the American people.” In this piece of evidence it tells how sports betting being legal will open up many jobs and strengthen our economy. My third and final reason is that it will make more money for the teams being betted on. My evidence comes from USA today and they say, “ Make no mistake, professional leagues will use the interest in gambling as a hook to promote their product while also taking their slice of the pie to boost revenues. Betting windows in the concourse of your local arena? Team-endorsed daily fantasy leagues? A gambling company putting its logo on someone’s jersey? “ In this piece of evidence It states that many leagues will take advantage of sports betting and still be able to make money if the ratings are low.
In conclusion I think that sports betting should be legal for the reasons above. I hope that I made you think about what you feel is right. So what would you chose, should it be legal and help everyday sports teams, or do you think that sports gambling will mess everything up.

  51. Use of Drones

Drones should be illegal. A drone is a small flying craft that is controlled by a remote of the owner. Anyone can purchase a drone. Drones can carry cameras which could be used to spy on people which is a huge invasion of others’ personal space and privacy. Drones are also very disruptive to people’s personal space. Many people are annoyed by the buzzing drones in their yard and property. Drones should be illegal.

Firstly, people can buy drones to fly constantly over someone’s house. Even if someone is just flying a drone over your neighbor’s house you can still hear the constant buzzing. Eric Schmidt, in the article Drones should be banned from private use Google's Eric Schmidt, says, “‘you’re having a dispute with your neighbor’ he hypothesized. ‘How would you feel if your neighbor went over and bought a commercial observation drone that they can launch from their backyard? It just flies over your house all day. How would you feel about it?’” You probably would be annoyed by your neighbor if they did this to you. You would feel like your personal property is being invaded. You would most likely not enjoy your neighbors buzzing drone.

Secondly, drones can carry many things, including cameras and microphones. People can trespass on your private property with their camera equipped drones and take pictures of your house. Axel Flores-Leon, in the article Drones Should Be Illegal, states: “Some drones may include secret cameras within them and that is already something that's over the limit. Imagine a flying drone looking at you in front of your window at home, now that's very creepy and a different form of spying.” This would be very disturbing if someone was looking at you from a camera equipped drone, seeing everything you are doing on your private property and even inside your home. Drones can come equipped with all different kinds of equipment to look into people’s houses.
Lastly, Drones are taking jobs from people. Amazon and FedEx are thinking about using drones to deliver packages, taking many drivers out of work. Drones could even replace our military, putting humans at less risk but taking many people’s jobs. A new report from PwC reads that, “Drones could replace $127 billion worth of human labor and services across several industries.” That is a lot of jobs being taken from people who need to work to support their families. This many people losing jobs would be bad for our economy and would most likely increase poverty in America. Drones should not be allowed to take jobs from people who need to work in order to live properly. As you can see, there are many reasons drones should be banned from use. They can be very annoying to people who are trying to enjoy peace and quiet. They can be used to spy on people and take away needed privacy. Lastly, drones are beginning to take away jobs from American citizens and could soon threaten our economy. There are many people who agree that drones should be banned for many different reasons, including the ones mentioned in this essay. This concludes that drones should be banned in the U.S.

    Topic: Global Warming

    Links:
    Article 1-https://www.ucsusa.org/global-warming#.W3X9vehKiM8
    Article 2- https://www.livescience.com/topics/global-warming

Global warming is harming the environment. Global warming is a large amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. It is harming animals, plants, and harming us. ‘Every one of the past 40 years has been warmer than the 20th century average(Article 1).’ Global warming is an extreme load of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. If we don’t end it, it may end us.
Fossil fuels are one thing causing global warming. Fossil fuels are temporary, so there is a chance that fossil fuels like oil could soon no longer exist, which may make our environment a little cleaner and reduce the chance of global warming.‘Where does all this carbon come from? The fossil fuels we burn for energy..(Article 1).’But, we’ve been using fossil fuels for years, so there is little chance of them running out in the next few years, so the only way to stop this problem is to use a renewable, cleaner source.
Deforestation is another thing that we must immediately stop for the sake of our environment and because of global warming. Trees and plants produce oxygen when given carbon dioxide, but they’re being torn down to make room for whatever people have decided to put there instead. This increases the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and also decreases the oxygen released into it, which increases the risk of suffocation and global warming. Sometimes it may be necessary to take away some trees, but too much can be hazardous.
Some evidence that global warming is actually doing harm is the fires that have eaten up California this summer. Every day the news seemed to have a new story about the fires. The fires could start small, like a spark or a match on the ground, but could quickly spread to become an inferno because of the heat. ‘The average temperature of the Earth has risen between 0.4 and 0.8 °C over the past 100 years(Article 2).’ People are already being cautious enough, but how far must we go to make this stop?
Global warming may be a disaster, but it’s not a hopeless one. We can stop it, and make the world a cleaner and better place. If we stop burning fossil fuels as much and use renewable sources instead, that would take away some of the carbon. If we stop expanding cities and deforestation, we will not only decrease carbon, we will also prevent animals from losing their homes. The temperatures are increasing, but there are still things we can do to decrease it and make the world cleaner.

    1. Somehow we should find a way to progress in living without destroying the environment. Another contributing factor to global warming might be the industrial age when the world was pretty ugly. Businesses were burning lots of gases without realizing their impact on the environment. Great job inspiring people to make a change, Josie!

  53. The Endangered Species Act (ESA) is currently in jeopardy, and lots of people want it changed. The act was created in 1973 to protect endangered species and their habitats. The federal Fish and Wildlife Service spends about $1.4 billion to protect threatened plants and animals each year, as of 2016. People who are looking to change the act think the precautions are a waste of money and they want to use the land preserved for animals for other purposes. People want reserved land to be used for mining oil or rocks. I think the Endangered Species Act should not be weakened, because it is helping protect plants and animals from going extinct.
The ESA protects creatures from oil companies. According to the article Lawmakers, Lobbyists and the Administration Join Forces to Overhaul the Endangered Species Act by Coral Davenport and Lisa Friedman, one proposed change to the act is “a measure to remove from the endangered list the American burying beetle, an orange-flecked insect that has long been the bane of oil companies that would like to drill on the land where it lives.” If the act is changed, the oil companies will take over the land, and kill the beetles and other species living there.
The ESA also has helped other animals. For instance, the gray wolf, who was endangered almost everywhere, are doing better, with populations growing in Alaska, and around the Great Lakes. Unfortunately, the state of Wyoming successfully sued to have gray wolves delisted, because the wolves threaten citizen’s cattle. Now wolves are starting to be hunted in that state. The change in Wyoming might threaten wolf population growth in that area.
Another example is the southern sea otter. According to the article the Trump administration wants to roll back the Endangered Species Act. These 10 animals might not be here today without it, by Drew Kann, “Hunted for their pelts, southern sea otters were nearly driven to extinction in the early 20th century, when only around 50 sea otters remained.” The otters have been doing better, thanks to the ESA, but oil spills and fishing nets are still a threat.
Since 1973, the Endangered Species Act has been saving animals, including the peregrine falcon, bald eagle, and green sea turtle, but now it is at risk. Oil companies and miners want to use the land the act preserved. States are having trouble with animals the act is protecting. Other animals need continued protection from human threats like oil spills. People also think the ESA is using too much unnecessary money. I think the act should stay the same because it has helped protect many species from extinction, which is a big problem. After a species is gone, it can’t come back.

  54. Why GMO Foods Are Safe, Part One
Have you ever been persuaded to buy products in the grocery store that advertise their status as "Non-GMO"? As it turns out, products without this special labeling are just as good for you, and maybe even better. In the Scientific American article, "Why People Oppose GMOs Even Though Science Says They Are Safe," by Stefaan Blancke, he says, "overwhelming scientific evidence [proves] that GMOs are safe to eat, and that they bring environmental benefits by making agriculture more sustainable." Many people believe that GMOs are damaging to our health and the environment when they are actually doing the opposite. I think that genetically modified foods should be recognized as beneficial and not harmful.
GMO foods should be seen as beneficial because they have better agricultural advantages than non-GMO foods. Genetic modification of foods can be used to increase the number of crops being grown. In the New York Times article, "Are G.M.O. Foods Safe," by Jane E. Brody, she states that out of 76 studies that took place in Pisa, Italy, all resulted in genetically modified corn having a higher yield than the corn that wasn't GMO. This means that if farmers used GMOs on their crops, they would be able to deliver higher quantities to markets and companies. Not only would farms be able to deliver a higher quantity of crops to buyers, they would also have a better quality. One way you can make a genetically engineered food is to mix genes of two organisms so one will get the other's beneficial traits. In the New York Times article, Brody states, "a gene meant to instill frost tolerance into, say, spinach, might come from a fish that lives in icy waters." Brody is explaining how, in this example, spinach would be able to last longer in the cold if it were genetically modified with a fish's genes. Also, if you're wondering if your food will taste like fish, don't worry. Blancke from the Scientific American says, "in an opinion survey in the United States, more than half of respondents said that a tomato modified with fish DNA would taste like fish (of course, it would not)." Lastly, studies have shown that genetically modified foods can improve the health of those who eat them, including animals. "In fact, animal health and growth efficiency actually improved on the genetically engineered feed, according to a 2014 review in the Journal of Animal Science," says Brody. This could help farmers' animals as well, making them better for produce.
Secondly, genetically engineered foods should be seen as beneficial because not only are they harmless, but they also have health benefits. So far, GMO foods have not been found to be at all damaging to people's health. In the New York Times article, Brody says that in the timeframe that people have been exposed to genetically engineered foods, no changes in health from costumers had been discovered. This doesn't mean that there aren't any health effects that may occur, but none so far have been found. Later in the article, she describes some health benefits that can be in GMO foods. "Nonetheless, gene modification scientists are focusing increasingly on building health benefits into widely used foods. In addition to pink pineapples containing the tomato-based antioxidant lycopene, tomatoes are being engineered to contain the antioxidant-rich purple pigment from blueberries." This means that GMO foods can be made to be even healthier than the non-GMO version of them, even if they do turn out looking a bit strange. She also provides another example as to how these health benefits can help in the long run. "And people in developing countries faced with famine and malnutrition are likely to benefit from attempts to improve the protein content of food crops, as well as the amount of vitamins and minerals they provide." Using genetically modified foods can help those in need like never before.
    End of Part One

    1. Why GMO Foods Are Safe, Part Two
Lastly, I think that genetically modified foods should be considered beneficial because they simply get a bad reputation. Many people believe that genetically engineered food is bad for your health because they are uninformed or are just afraid of the new change. Brody says, "it is no surprise that genetic engineering of food and feed crops resulted in their resounding condemnation as “Frankenfoods” by many consumers, who seem as terrified of eating an apple with an added anti-browning gene or a pink pineapple genetically enriched with the antioxidant lycopene as I am of self-driving cars." People can be and are afraid of the changes in the future, so it can be hard to convince someone that something, like GMOs, are safe. Not only are people just afraid of the changes that could be made in our future, they like to give into ideas that support their claims, even if they are not true. Blanke from the Scientific American describes a paper he had written on the topic. "I recently published a paper, with a group of Belgian biotechnologists and philosophers from Ghent University, arguing that negative representations of GMOs are widespread and compelling because they are intuitively appealing," He says. "They capture our attention, they are easily processed and remembered and thus stand a greater chance of being transmitted and becoming popular, even if they are untrue. Thus, many people oppose GMOs, in part, because it just makes sense that they would pose a threat." His paper also covers the point of how people are either uninformed or misinformed on the subject. He shows an example of this, describing how people think that foods treated with DNA from an animal would taste like that animal. If people had more information on the topic, the vast majority of the population would be more comfortable with modifying the foods we eat.
In conclusion, I think that GMOs should be seen as beneficial and not harmful. In the grand scheme of things, this new way of producing foods could lead to better average health and even a better economy. Most people just don't know enough about genetically engineered foods, causing them to assume they can't be good for someone to eat. It's important to give people the correct information so we can lead to a more innovative future.

    https://www.onegreenplanet.org/animalsandnature/whats-so-bad-about-plastic-bags/

    https://www.livestrong.com/article/216666-why-are-plastic-bags-so-bad-for-the-environment/

How many plastic grocery bags do you use? The correct answer should be none. Plastic bags may be convenient, but what are they used for once you use them? Plastic bags can only be used once, maybe twice. But once they have served a purpose most people just throw them away. If they are only used a few times there will always be a need for more bags. If there are more bags there is more danger. Plastic shopping bags are bad for the environment and we should avoid using them.

Plastic bags get used everyday. While they may be useful to us,they are not so useful to the environment. Plastic grocery bags take longer to erode than other bags and items. One green planet researched and found that, “Single-use disposable plastic bags are suffocating the planet, with 60,000 plastic bags being consumed in the U.S. every 5 seconds”. As the amount of bags continues to increase, plastic bags will continue to fill landfills. Since plastic bags do not erode easily they will fill more and more landfills. They are not good for the environment and should not be used anymore.

Plastic bags become an easy solution for people, but not for animals. Plastic bags don’t always end in landfills, often they go into bodies of water. Plastic bags are harmful when they are put in water. Marine animals can be killed by one mistake involving plastic bags. “As of August 2010, between 500 billion and 1 trillion plastic bags are being used each year worldwide. Approximately 100,000 sea turtles and other marine animals die every year because they either mistake the bags for food or get strangled in them, says Natural Environment”, Says Maggie New. There is always someone to tell young children what to do and what not to do. This is not true for the marine animals. If the marine animals can’t put an end to the use of plastic bags then it is up to us to stop using them.

Plastic grocery bags can be a threat to everyone. Plastic bags can be a hazard to animals and humans. The material plastic bags are made of can contain toxins that may be harmful to the the surrounding area if they are neglected and littered in the streets. “The floods in Bangladesh in 1988 and 1998, and frequent flooding in Manila can be attributed to blockages caused by this litter. Plastic bags also pose serious health hazards to populations as over time they leach toxic chemicals into drinking water supplies.” (One Green Planet). If we neglect to take care of plastic bags then there will be an after effect on everyone. It is up to us to prevent health hazards by reducing plastic grocery.

Plastic grocery bags are useful for small tasks, but there is a more efficient alternative. Most grocery stores will allow alternatives to the plastic bag. By using reusable bags the number of bags needed will shrink. “Every U.S. grocery chain carries cheap reusable grocery bags as of August 2010, ranging from 99 cents to about $5.” says Maggie New. These cheap solutions are an easy substitute to the plastic bags that hurt our environment. People should stop using plastic grocery bags and start using reusable bags.

Plastic grocery bags are dangerous. Plastic bags are hurting animals and the environment. There are many ways to stop the use of plastic bags, but it is up to us to make this happen. We should stop the use of plastic grocery bags. It is our job to stop polluting the earth and stop using plastic bags.

  56. Texting And Driving

Texting and driving is one of the main causes in teenage deaths. The NYPD has given out 47,914 summonses in the year of 2014. This problem is also increasing tremendously throughtout the recent years. With grows up to 50%. This is a dangerous problem that needs to be stopped.

I believe that this problem needs to be stopped because of the dangers to teens and young adults. I think that if we stop or reduce this problem teen deaths will hit a huge drop. Also, I do believe that people who are texting and driving are not only putting themselves in danger but also, other innocent people as well. They could prevent this problem by putting their phone down so they're not interacting with it.

If teens put down their phones we could have less tragedies. Newsday said that " Only 24 percent of 15-year-olds tapped out messages while driving, compared with 58 percent of 18-year-olds, the data showed." Which can mean that most younger drivers pick up the phone to respond to the text. Newsday also put texting and driving as the same danger of drinking and driving. Nationwide 424,000 people injured due to distracted driving. If we prevent this problem the numbers will be decreased, it is on the edge of surpassing the danger of drinking and driving.

In conclusion, I think preventing teens to use their cellphones during driving will not just help them but it will keep the world around us safer and smarter.

  59. Across the world, animals are used every day to test drugs and medications that are intended for human use. This causes many animals to suffer from pain or even death from these new medications. Often, the results with animal aren't the same for humans. Many think we should stop using animals as science experiments. Should animal testing be banned?

First off, some people think that animal testing should be banned because it is cruel and inhumane. Each year, over 100 million animals are killed for testing purposes, according to www.peta.org. People think this is inhumane because there are other, more accurate testing methods. Scientists can more accurately test medications using artificial human cells. They can also test using donated blood from humans. These methods are more accurate and they do not harm anybody. This is why some believe that animal testing should be banned because it is cruel and inhumane.

Second, some believe that animal testing should not be banned because it saves many lives each year. According to the California Biomedical Research Association, almost every breakthrough and cure over the past century has been discovered because of animal testing. One example is the polio vaccine. It was tested on animals. It has reduced polio occurrence by nearly 350,000 people since 1988. Other life saving medications have also been found due to animal testing. People are being cured every day due to these medicines. That is why some think that animal testing should not be banned because it can save lives.

In conclusion, there are good arguments to both sides of the question, but should animal testing be banned? I personally believe that there are good sides to both, but some things should be changed. I hope that those reading now understand both arguments and can form an opinion. Thanks for reading.

  62. People should pay more attention to climate change because of its effect on weather

Did you know that climate change has been affecting our weather for decades and we have done nothing about it? It has been making weather more extreme and dangerous to society. When we release carbon dioxide, methane, water vapor, and nitrous oxide into the air, the atmosphere acts as a giant “blanket” surrounding the earth that has been keeping the gases in. The gases result in warming the air and the ground.
First of all, climate change has made the amount of rain per year increase in some parts of the U.S. Some regions like the East and Midwest have been experiencing heavy downpours that lead to flooding. Researchers have found that “the rainfall percentage per year is 40% above average.” All of the water vapor, carbon dioxide, and increased condensation in the air has created more clouds full of precipitation. This could become a problem in the near future because of all the flooding that can occur.
Even though the East, and Midwest have been getting pounded with rain, the West and parts of the South have been experiencing a major drought. Droughts are caused when there are really high temperatures and not enough rain to support the vegetation. “An example of recent drought occurred in 2011, when many locations in Texas and Oklahoma experienced more than 100 days over 100°F. The heat and drought depleted water resources and contributed to more than $10 billion in direct losses to agriculture alone.” These losses are the number one example of why some of our produce costs so much. As consumers, we try to eat healthy foods as much as possible. However, the effect of droughts on agriculture makes it more expensive to do so. This is why many families opt for junk food because it is a lot cheaper. This could lead to obesity in many people because of the expense of fresh fruit and vegetables.
Lastly, climate change has also been helping strengthen hurricanes. Climate change has been warming the surface of the ocean waters, which is how hurricanes gain their strength. The reason Hurricane Harvey was so strong and so devastating is because of how warm the Gulf waters are. Another effect of the ocean waters being so warm is an increase in the number of hurricanes that happen each year. Scientists say that “the recent increases in activity are linked, in part, to higher sea surface temperatures in the region that Atlantic hurricanes form in and move through.” As the water temperature rises even more, we could have a season of all category five hurricanes. Imagine how catastrophic and damaging this could be to our coastal regions! If we don’t do something about climate change, we could be endangering the lives of people that live in coastal regions of the United States.
To conclude, climate change has been affecting us for decades now, and will continue to affect how we live all across the country. The climate change has made oceans warmer, caused more condensation in the air, and even caused major droughts. Remember, if we don’t stop climate change, we could have a major problem for the human race. Here are a few things you can do to help climate change come to an end: use LED light bulbs, plant a tree, compost and stop throwing away food. These are just a small portion of the ways we can help stop climate change. The only person who can make a change in this big world is you.

  63. How The Drought in Madagascar - Part 1
    Affects The U.S.A
Vanilla beans are not able to thrive with little water, due to the drought in Madagascar. Vanilla use to be seven dollars, and is now up to 193 dollars per pound. Which causes the product price to go up, creating less customers..The increasing price of vanilla causes not just problems for businesses but also for the consumers health.
First of all, this drought has affected bakers, and bakery products. Since the vanilla cost went up due to the drought in Madagascar, the bakeries have to spend more money on a single ingredient that is used in many different dishes. If the bakers need more vanilla, they will need to charge more for their products. So, they will raise the price on the goods, which means fewer people will buy from that company. An example from CBS News, ‘“How important is that Madagascar vanilla?” CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy asked ice cream business owner, Karen Klemens. “My vanilla ice cream would not be the same without it,” Klemens said. Yet these days, she’s losing money on every scoop. Vanilla has surpassed dairy as her biggest cost. The price she pays for a gallon of organic vanilla extract has nearly quadrupled since she first opened her doors five years ago.” Surprisingly she doesn’t raise her price because she still wants her customers. This shows that bakers try to use true vanilla, but in the end it costs them more money to produce their products, which in turn creates less profit for the baker.
Bakers use artificial vanilla or imitation vanilla, because, ‘“Vanilla is not a product where you can go out and get it tomorrow. It takes three years for that vine to produce a vanilla bean,” Lochhead said.’’’ From CBS News. Vanilla beans take so long to grow, so that makes the production of vanilla so much harder, and can create less vanilla in total. Also the drought in Madagascar causes the shipments of the sparse vanilla, to cost a small fortune. Another reason bakers use fake vanilla is because is that they can not afford the shipment and/or the price. The reason they can’t afford it is because they use so much vanilla, with all of the different food items they create. Artificial vanilla is so much less expensive and the difference in the taste is hardly noticeable. Therefore, it doesn’t change the products taste in at all, but you need twice as much imitation vanilla to have the taste of true vanilla.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Part 2
Lastly, artificial vanilla is worse for you than real vanilla. Artificial vanilla is worse for you because, it doesn’t have as much nutrients as real vanilla has. “Do not rely on imitation vanilla flavoring to boost your vitamin and mineral intake by a significant percentage. One serving of this fluid contains 3 percent of the daily recommended intake of manganese and 1 percent of the riboflavin you should consume each day. While this is not a large amount of either of these nutrients, it does make imitation vanilla slightly useful for keeping your bones healthy and reducing your risk of cardiovascular disease.” States Niki Wolf. So, imitation also known as artificial vanilla, is not super bad for you, but it doesn’t have everything real vanilla has. It doesn’t have a lot of nutrients that your body needs, or that real vanilla includes. Also, “imitation vanilla flavoring relies on lignin vanillin, a chemically produced compound that mimics the flavor of vanillin, the natural extract from real vanilla that produces its flavor. Lignin vanillin is created using wastes produced in the paper manufacturing industry. Some vanilla flavorings also contain glycerin or a glycol base.” So the imitation vanilla is not as good for you as real vanilla is. Even though the flavor is similar between artificial vanilla and real vanilla, nothing beats the true flavor of vanilla.
Increase in the price of vanilla has caused not just problems for businesses but also for the consumers health. Businesses are not able to produce as many products with real vanilla in it because of how expensive vanilla is, so they are forced to use artificial vanilla, which doesn’t have all the vitamins and minerals you need in the product. Therefore, the increase in price of vanilla is not just a problem for businesses, but for the consumers health as well. Madagascar being the number one producer of vanilla company in the world, the entire world is affected by Madagascar’s drought.

  65. Social Media and its Negative Impacts.

    By: Madison Schmidt

Social media-like everything-has its good and bad effects. For example, you can keep in touch with long distance friends but it also allows people more opportunities to bully and judge others. Some may feel like the good outweighs the bad. I disagree. I feel like social media has more negative consequences then positive.
Social media can have a negative impact on school work. Kids are relying on spell check and Siri to fix their spelling or grammar mistakes. “The popularity of social media, and the speed at which information is published, has created a lax attitude towards proper spelling and grammar. The reduces a student’s ability to effectively write without relying on a computer’s spell check feature.” (The 10 Best and Worst Ways Social Media Impacts Education) Later on this will cause difficulties when having to hand-write papers and not have access to spell check. People often forget that everything they do on social media is being documented. No matter if they delete something it will always be there. “The degree to which private information is available online and the anonymity the internet seems to provide has made students forget the need to filter the information they post. Many colleges and potential employers investigate an applicant’s social networking profiles before granting acceptance or interviews.” (The 10 Best and Worst Ways Social Media Impacts Education) People forget that everything they post can effect them whether it is in a few days, months or years. There are scientific facts that state that because kids use their social media so much that they forget how to interact with other kids. This proves to be a problem when they have to socialize in school group projects.
Although almost everyone has some type of social media does not mean that everyone is nice on it. The sad part is that when cyber bullying happens kids typically do not tell their parents or trusted adult. “Two-thirds said they would not tell their parents if they experienced something upsetting online.” (Social media firms 'failing' to tackle cyber-bullying) When people are getting bullied and are too afraid to tell then it will continue happening. This is not something to be taken lightly. Bullying can lead to other and worse things such as depression. “The heaviest users of social media amongst the respondents were mostly likely to have low wellbeing and symptoms of anxiety and depression.” (Social media firms 'failing' to tackle cyber-bullying) When people post things that are meant to hurt someone they forget to take into account of the consequences. Not only for themselves but for the one they are hurting. People also tend to compare themselves to others they follow on social media. They look at how many followers others have and they may not feel important. They may feel left out and their lives are not as exciting as others.

  66. Social Media and its Negative Impacts.

    Second Half:

Social media makes people have unrealistic expectations of themselves and life. People are willing to do things such as stop what they are doing to take and sometimes retake the “perfect” picture. “Now you have social outings where it takes 10 minutes to dive into a dish because everybody needs to post and earn those likes.” (Social media creates unrealistic life expectations) Little things like waiting to eat for a picture, taking constant selfies, and having to take the best photo has major implications on one’s daily life. There is something called “FOFM” or the fear of missing out. People are constantly looking at what other people are doing, at all the fun they are having. When they can’t have that they feel like there missing out in life. This can lead to the feeling of depression and the feeling of being unsuccessful.(Social media creates unrealistic life expectations) When people see that others are attending fun events such as concerts and festivals, they also desire to participate in these events. “People who attend even these sorts of events constantly post and make one constantly check their Snap Story or Instagram only making the user wish he or she was there.” (Social media creates unrealistic life expectations) Social media gives people the idea that they need to constantly do things that look fun so that people think they are happy. In some cases they post just to make people jealous of them.
Social media will always be here. It's going to continue to have good and bad effects. Right now I feel like the negative effects outweigh the positive. If we begin to take into consideration of what we post and how this might affect others, things may get better. We also need to know how to establish appropriate time management skills when utilizing social media so it does not interfere with school work. If we all learn how to properly use social media then social media might become a great resource. You can start that by using social media right.

  67. Kids around the U.S. play tackle football. children as young as 8 put on the pads and hit in practice, and in game. But is this safe? a lot of research has been done on this topic and a lot of it says that football is dangerous for young kids. Football can cause severe brain damage among other things. Young kids should not play tackle football.
Brain damage is a big reason why people want to eliminate tackle football for children. In an article by the New York Times, they state that "boys between the ages of 8 and 13 who played just one season of tackle football had diminished brain function in parts of their brains." This is after just one season of football, showing how much damage can be one in just a short period of playing. Also, in an article by the Washington Post, they state that "The brain is going through this incredible time of growth between the years of 10 and 12, and if you subject that developing brain to repetitive head impacts, it may cause problems later in life," showing that playing football can cause brain damage throughout your entire life.
Another way that football can damage your brain is a brain disease that can come from football called chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). In the same article by the Washington Post, they talk about a study done by Boston College on old NFL players brains, and how many of them had CTE or another brain disease. The article states that "Boston University center's earlier study that found 110 out of 111 brains of deceased NFL players had degenerative brain disease." The article also states that this "should give pause to any parent who thinks playing football would be in their child's best interest. Yes, there is some risk in most sports, but the emerging evidence seems to put football in a category of its own." Saying that football can be dangerous, and that you should think twice before playing.
Football is a very dangerous sport. it can cause very severe brain damage to children, which is why children should not play tackle football. Children should instead play flag football, then play tackle at an older age. Young kids should not play tackle football until an older age.

    Participation trophies

Let’s say your son’s baseball team gets last place in the league standings. At the end of the season the team gets the same participation trophies as the winning team. Do you think this is right.

I personally believe there should not be any participation trophies because if the losing team gets the same award as the winning team that is just not right.

Participation trophies shouldn’t be given to younger children. According to “the memory wheel.com” “This aversion to losing at the youth level is harmful because it completely ignores the value of losing. Every sporting competition has a winner and a loser.” So if young kids get participation trophies they will never learn the real value of losing. Although you may think that participation trophies will boost young kids confidence, it really makes them lose their competitive behavior because they think they are always winners. Participation trophies also make kids not want to practice the sport they play. According to “theodysseyonline.com” it states “ you played soccer and you got a trophy- but did you win any games? You get the same trophy as all of your teammates, but did you score any goals?” Which will make kids believe they don’t need Improvement when they really do need it.

In order to solve this issue you at home newt to help. Contact a league administrator near you and report the issue about participation trophies. Now together let’s get rid of these trophies!

  69. In current events today, many people are faced with the issue of staying true to their self on a daily basis. Recently, New York City police officers turn their backs on Mayor Bill de Blasio as he spoke at a funeral for one of the two officers killed while on duty. These two men were targeted specifically because they were officers. Prior to these killings, the mayor hired an inspector to help cut down on police brutality and racial profiling. Unions felt that the mayor helped create tension and the environment that caused this situation. The mayor supports peaceful protests for police reform and the police officers and unions feel they shouldn’t change.
    https://www.infoplease.com/current-events/nyc-police-officers-turn-their-backs-mayor

Another debate that holds strong opinions in current events today would be the Women’s March against President Trump and his policies. These women are protesting for political change, equal rights for women and encouraging each other to run in the Democratic elections going forward. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/20/us/womens-march.html

Each of these issues have a similarity. Both protesters have strong feelings regarding their position. I believe that each have a right to their beliefs and what they stand up for. As long as they are open to change and not pushy about your own ideas, but stay true to themselves they are being the best person they can be.

First reason is, that if you stay true to what you believe and stand up for you will be respected. In regards to the police officers and the mayor both have strong feelings. The police officers are sometimes in a fight for their own life when going after the bad guys and need to protect themselves. But some may abuse their power. This is what the mayor wants to change. It’s not that he does not support the police officers and values their lives, he would like to see a balance. As stated in the article, “Even though he condemned any act of violence, de Blasio supported the peaceful demonstrations for police reform.” (https://www.infoplease.com/current-events/nyc-police-officers-turn-their-backs-mayor)

The final reason staying true to yourself, allows you to be energized. The women’s march that occurred all over the United States in different cities allowed women to speak of changes they want. The election of President Trump brought attention to the need women have for change not only on political matters, but everyday living. They are fired up. In the article it was stated, “To change the system, we need to change the players and have women at the table.” The women that are protesting have strong beliefs and are being true to themselves by rallying together. In order to impact others, we need to convince them that change is for the better. (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/20/us/womens-march.html)

For all these reasons, it is easy to see that you should stay true to yourself, I can relate to Stargirl easily because I’m a student myself and dealing with the peer pressures of fitting in. I am starting to learn how to be confident in myself and the decisions I make, and not let others change that. I want to be that person who has that infectious personality and walks through life passionately.

  70. Do people get enough sleep? No. About one-third of Americans don’t get those 7 hours of sleep time, and it's severely affecting them. Not enough sleep can cause things like heart disease, behavior issues and other problems like obesity. People need more sleep.

Heart disease is the number one leading cause of death in America, and it can occur because of lack of sleep. People that don’t sleep as much are more likely to die of heart problems. Little rest can make proteins go into your blood, witch effects your immune system. You can get sick easily when your immune systems down, and even stuff like a simple cold can be hard to get rid of. Heart attacks and strokes can also happen due to little sleep. The proteins in your blood can sometimes clog up causing these problems. So please stop lying in bed at night watching TV and get some rest for Pete's sake! Heart problems can come from lack of sleep.

Grumpy sibling in the morning? They probably didn’t get much sleep. People are generally moody when they don’t rest much. A study at Harvard University states that people who get 4.5 hours or less of sleep every night are more stressed, angry, sad, and mentally exhausted than people with more rest. In other words; they’re moody. Lack of sleep can also create mental problems, like anxiety, which make it harder to get proper rest. Without better sleep to help with the psychological issues they are difficult to cure. People need to get more sleep for their sake, and the people around them’s.

Internal problems are not the only issues that come from no sleep, people’s lacking rest can cause other matters like obesity. Over past years more and more people have been becoming overweight. The NSF (National Sleep Foundation) ‘s research shows that improving the sleep of Americans would help strengthen their obesity. Little sleep makes people not be very active, hence, obesity from lack of exercise. Anything you try to do to improve sleep disorders, other than rest, will not help. Charts from the NSF show that all choices people make while lacking sleep will lead to obesity. People don’t realize the extent little rest goes too. Obesity is a problem that can be linked to rest.

Not enough sleep is a massive problem for the people of our world. Most don’t understand the harmful effects it can have on you and your health. From obesity and heart problems to mood swings your sleep has impacts on your life. People need to get more sleep.

  71. No Snack Cart in the Cafeteria

Many kids at school buy hot lunch from their cafeterias, but most of the food served there isn't healthy or organic. Overall, it's usually bad for you. Having healthier foods in the cafeteria will make the food better tasting and better for you. Overall, there should be no snack cart! It is taking away from kids lunches, it's unhealthy, and when they buy it, they forget about their real lunch!

First of all, kids love snack cart in school cafeterias, but do we really need them? Snack cart takes away from kids lunches. When kids get something from snack cart, all they focus on is that food and not the rest of their real lunch! All they want is the unhealthy foods from the snack cart and not the actual lunch that they already had. It is a big waste of money because they are using money to buy food, even though they already have food packed in their lunch. In conclusion, snack cart take away from kids packed lunches.

Secondly, snack cart has foods like chips, ice cream, cookies, and more. All things of which are unhealthy. Snack cart and cafeterias need to start providing healthier options in the snack cart. Most food served at the snack cart and in the cafeteria in general is not exactly healthy for you. They need to take out things like ice cream and replace it with something thing fruits and vegetables! "For kids whose parents feed them healthfully at home, schools should not undermine the parent’s good efforts. In homes where students do not have access to healthy foods, schools should be a place where students can count on eating healthfully – this is important because some children may be eating more than half of their calories at school on school days." Overall, snack cart foods and cafeteria foods are unhealthy for you.

Finally, kids get so distracted by seeing when the snack cart opens that they forget about their real lunch! Sometimes, waiting in line for the snack cart can take up the whole lunch period! Getting snack cart food is a waste of time when you should be eating the lunch that you originally had. Sometimes, when a kid does this it leads to them not having time to eating what they bought from snack cart and not eating their lunch. Especially with ice cream, it takes too long to eat and it's too messy. When kids buy snack cart, they forget about their lunches!

To conclude, school cafeterias should not have snack cart. It takes away from kids lunches, it serves unhealthy foods, and when kids buy it, they forget about their real lunch! Snack carts are not necessary in schools. Kids should have their own lunch everyday and not need to buy anything else.

  73. Do you want to be a guinea pig? An experimental subject? At least you have the option because animals do not. Animals provide us with information that saves so many lives but also kills so many. Over 100 million animals die each year due to animal testing. I believe we should reduce animal testing.
First, we should start reducing animal testing by finding alternate ways. For example, “Researchers have developed a wide range of sophisticated computer models that simulate human biology and the progression of developing diseases. Studies show that these models can accurately predict the ways the new drugs will react in the human body.” Stated in Peta.org.
A disadvantage with animal testing is that animals are not humans. The closer we get to a human, the closer the results will be. As stated in hsi.org, “who are we trying to cure here, is it the mouse or the man?”
Last but not least, we should reduce the amount of animal testing because of the pain they go through. They bleed, they suffer, and they are lonely. All of it is because of testing. As stated in Peta.org “We know that cigarette are dangerous, so why do we still force dogs and monkeys to smoke?” We are putting these animal through pain we don't need to put them through. “It's wrong to do it to animals just like it was wrong to do it to orphans, jews, gypsies, and blacks.” Peta.org
To sum this up, I believe we should cut down the amount of animal testing because we are able to find new ways to test and let animals live the life they want to live.

  74. Should dolphins getting trapped in nets be prevented?
“ In a small portion of france’s coastal waters (between Vendée and Charente Maritime), it’s estimated that up to 10,000 dolphins are killed each year.” (The dodo) Dolphins are dying in substantial numbers because of the thin fishing nets they cannot avoid and drowns them upon capture. This should not happen; when solutions exist that are straight forward. Dolphins getting trapped in fishing nets should be prevented.
What is the effect of these deaths on the dolphin population? The reason it’s a big deal is because so many of them are dying. “ Fishing nets are estimated to kill upward of 300,000 cetaceans every year.” ( pop science) ( Cetacean-dolphins, whales and porpoises) This means on average 821 cetaceans killed a day, per year. That is a lot of cetaceans which includes dolphins dying because of the nets being used. People around the world don’t tell anyone about the dolphins being killed and maybe even hide it. “10,000 dolphins are being secretly killed in France every year.” (The dodo) This tells us that about 27 dolphins died every day in France alone.. “More than 650,000 marine mammals including dolphins, whales, seals and turtles are killed or severely injured each year after getting caught in fishing nets according to the Natural Resources Defence council.”(The dodo) So, along with dolphins many other marine animals die too that may not see the thin nets. Our ecosystem is important, so should we try stop these accidental killings?
The marine animals are getting caught in the fishing nets. When caught, they can’t get out so the dolphins drown. When the fishermen pull the net up, they might be dead or alive. They can drown in more than one way. “ ... the fishermen don’t try to save their lives - the animals are usually killed and are tossed overboard as “bycatch”. (The dodo) “They cut their fins off and tail and remove them from the nets in order not to damage the nets,” Essemlali said.” (The dodo) With no fins they drown, these animals, if they survive, need a chance. Knowing that “nets are very expensive.” (The dodo) We might consider lowering the prices of nets and make them better suitable for the dolphins to see with their sonar. Then we take into consideration both the people and the dolphins..
This problem is very upsetting to hear about. But, even though it is upsetting, it can be stopped. “The problem is the nets are too thin and amorphous for the animals to see with their sonar and so they get caught unintentionally.”(pop science) When their sonar does not hit the object because it is too thin, the animals swim in because they think that there is nothing in their way. So, you need them to understand that there is something there by communicating to them through sonar. “A beacon used by the british navy to mark minefields has been miniaturized to the extent that it can be strung onto fishing nets to warn cetaceans to stay away.” This will solve the problem because when the signal gets heard by the dolphins and other sonar using animals they will be warned to go around because there is danger. There is also other ways that you can fix the problem. “... According to Smith, the banning of destructive fishing nets - like gillnets and trawling nets - would be a first good step, Smith explained.” (The dodo) There are different types of nets that you can use for different fishing. Some nets are terrible for the marine animals like the ones that cover a lot of space and can be left out over nights. This does not allow for the dolphins to breath because they cannot get out . So banning things like that can help keep those animals alive.
The point of both of those solutions is that there is a problem and it needs to be fixed. Dolphins have an important role in our whole ecosystem, and we need to do our best to keep them alive. LET’S PROTECT OUR DOLPHINS from being killed by fishing nets!

Many people think that if they buy a dog from a breeder or puppy mill they are helping the “animal world”. Well, they might be helping that particular animal but they are not helping the shelters and rescues. They are not helping because millions of perfectly house worthy pets are entering shelters and rescues every year. When you adopt from a shelter you are saving one animal from being killed, and if you adopt from a rescue or shelter the animals usually come with all of their vaccinations and health care.

First of all, there is an overpopulation in shelters and rescues. About 7.6 million animals enter a shelter and 1.2 million enter a rescue a year. Also, because of the over population, 3 million a year don’t get adopted. Do you think this is fair to animals? Most animals that enter these rescues and shelters are also perfectly house worthy pets that deserve a home.

Secondly, each year “2.7 million adoptable dog and cats are euthanized in the United States, simply because too many pets come into shelters and to few people adoption when looking for a pet.” So this is saying that a lot of the animals that come in, end up getting euthanized because people don't consider adoption.

Lastly, if you do decide to adopt from a rescue or shelter the animals usually come with all of their vaccinations and health care. This is very helpful because their vaccinations can cost up to 3,000 dollars, and that's a lot of money!

In conclusion, it’s best to adopt animals from shelters and rescues. This is because the shelters and rescues are overpopulated, you would be saving a life!, and the animals usually come with their vaccinations and health care. I hope you now understand that you should adopt animals from shelters and rescues.

  76. Recent data shows that with adults ages 20 years and over, 34.2 percent are overweight, 33.8 percent are obese and 5.7 percent are extremely obese. Poor eating habits is the major contributing factor to excess weight and obesity in the U.S. Eating healthier allows people to live a overall better lifestyle. Not only does eating healthier improve your overall mood, it additionally aids the body in combating obesity related diseases and allows the body to grow strong. When a person commits to eating healthy they will experience improvement both physically and emotionally.
We are not only at what we eat, but eating healthy improves our moods. Nutritious foods tweak our brain chemistry and help us stay happy, energized and even calm. For example, when we eat foods that are nutritious, the brain releases the hormone serotonin that activates appetite, mood, and sleep. Eating carbs and junk food makes your mood negative while eating healthy makes it more positive. Also, The good fats in fish alter brain chemistry in favor of being happier and smarter, while the bad fats in meat clog blood vessels in the brain, which muddles thinking and mood. So, instead of choosing to eat pizza or fast food for dinner, choose an oily fish such as salmon to eat. Although fish may not be as appetizing as a pizza, it has much more food value such as good fats and protein.

Furthermore, Although eating healthy is generally better for us, it allows humans to achieve physical wellbeing. For example, A diet rich in calcium keeps your teeth and bones strong and can help to slow bone loss (osteoporosis) associated with getting older. Calcium is usually found in dairy products such as milk and cheese, But there are many other foods that are rich in calcium such as sardines, pilchards, and salmon. You could also find calcium in dark green vegetables, like kale and broccoli. Another way to maintain fit is to make sure you have a healthy and happy heart. The heart is the most important part of the body, which means if anything bad could happen to it, it would be a big deal. A healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy can help to reduce your risk of heart disease by maintaining blood pressure and cholesterol levels. High blood pressure and cholesterol can be a symptom of too much salt and saturated fats in your diet. The high levels of omega-3 fatty acids in fish are good for heart health. Eating healthier allows people to live a overall better lifestyle.
Additionally, healthy eating allows you to combat obesity related diseases such as diabetes. For example, maintaining a healthy weight and eating a balanced diet that's low in saturated fat and high in fiber found in whole grains can help to reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Moving on, obesity is based off of bad weight control. Eating a diet contains a lot of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, moderately unsaturated fats, meat and dairy can help you maintain a steady weight. Having a good variety of these foods every day leaves less
room for foods that are high in fat and sugar, a leading cause of weight gain. Together with exercise, eating a healthy diet in the right proportions can also help you lose weight, lower your cholesterol levels and blood pressure and decrease your risk of type 2 diabetes.
Although some people believe that eating what appeals to them will make them happy, Eating healthy is where actual improvement in mood and lifestyle occur. Healthier eating improves moods, allows people to achieve physical wellbeing and helps combat obesity. A well balanced diet provides all of the energy you need to keep active throughout the day, nutrients you need for growth and repair, helping you to stay strong and healthy and help to prevent diet-related illnesses. Eating healthy benefits many aspects of life such as mood. Without eating good on a daily basis, you will feel sleepy and sad, but if you decide to eat healthy, moods improve and you feel more positive. Healthier eating allows you to live a better lifestyle.

Do you play an instrument? If you don’t, you should start soon! Some people don’t want to play an instrument because they are busy with other things like sports, but playing an instrument can benefit you in many ways that other activities cannot. Playing an instrument has many benefits including, strengthening your brain, helping people to develop better social skills, and helping to relieve stress.

Playing an instrument strengthens your brain in a lot of different ways. One of those ways is that it strengthens your reading skills. “Both musical ability and literacy show increased electrical signals in the brain, demonstrating that music and reading both tap into the same brain abilities.” (Nine Ways Learning an Instrument Strengthens Your Brain) So playing an instrument can actually help your reading skills. Playing an instrument also helps to train your brain to multitask and for you to concentrate. When you are playing an instrument you have to be reading the music, thinking about what note to play, considering the timing, and making sure you are playing in sync with the band or orchestra. This is a lot to do at once, and it takes a lot of concentration. These are just a couple of the reasons why playing an instrument strengthens your brain.

Playing an instrument can help you develop better social skills. One way it does this is that when you play an instrument, you have to have patience, because if you are having trouble with playing a certain song, you need to have patience to be able to play it better next time. When you play an instrument, you have to work as a team with your band or orchestra. “Everyone must do their part reliably for the whole group to succeed.” (How Learning an Instrument Can Boost Your Social Life) So you obviously have to rely on the other players in your band or orchestra to play the right notes too, so you can get a good sound overall. This definitely helps you to work well with people at other necessary times in life. These are just some of the many examples of how playing an instrument can help you to develop better social skills.

When you play an instrument, it can actually help to relieve your stress. Everybody experiences stress in life, and when you are playing an instrument it can help to take some of that stress away. “Playing music helps you practice mindfulness. Mindfulness is the state of being fully aware of the current moment, without being distracted by past events or future worries. Meditation is a common way to exercise mindfulness, but practicing your scales or learning a song works well, too.” (The Liverpool Academy of Music) So as you can see, mindfulness helps to relieve stress and you practice mindfulness when you are playing an instrument.

In conclusion, you can now see that there are so many benefits of playing an instrument. It helps you in all kinds of different ways!!! When will you start playing an instrument?!

Today on our earth many things are polluting the ocean and our environment, but one of the things on our earth that not many places accept to recycle are plastic straws. About 500 million plastic straws are used everyday by americans, and many end up in the ocean.

According to Fast Company, “the movement to ban straws and other single-use plastics is growing.” Back in May, a single Girl Scout managed to convince an entire airline (Alaska Airlines) to give up plastic straws entirely. Business Insider has claimed that Seattle was the first U.S. city to ban plastic utensils and straws. Many other places in the U.S. are planning to do the same these places include, New York City, Hawaii, California and many more cities and states.

Personally I believe that plastic straws should be accepted everywhere to be recycled, because if they aren’t too many will pollute our oceans and cause harm to the animals that live there. In March, 2016 a group of marine biologists in Costa Rica were shocked to find an endangered sea turtle with a 10-12 cm plastic straw stuck in its nose. Over 100,000 sea creatures die from some kinds of plastic every year and those are only the bodies found. Also about 1 million seabirds die from plastic as well. So much as a single plastic bag can kill several animals because they take so long to disintegrate.

A couple solutions to plastic straws are metal, paper and bamboo straws. Metal straws are reusable and washable so it's easy to use in restaurants and at home. Paper and Bamboo straws unlike plastic straws are biodegradable, Don’t harm the earth nearly as much as plastic but are still extremely easy to use just like plastic straws. Bamboo straws are Biodegradable, Sustainable and reusable which are way better than plastic straws. There is another type of plastic straws called PLA Straws. PLA Straws are made of renewable resources such as corn starch or sugar cane. It is a natural polymer designed to substitute widely used petroleum-based plastics. PLA products take up to 6 months to compost in a commercial composting facility, However even though PLA is biodegradable, PLA straws and other PLA products become another form of plastic that will take years to breakdown in landfills and the ocean which are the most common places they will end up.

In the end, Plastic straws are getting less and less common in the U.S. and different types of straws such as Metal, Paper, Bamboo and even PLA straws are getting more common it’s up to the people to decide if we want our earth to be a healthier place or not. Despite the fact that these different types of straws are way healthier for us and our animals many places and people will decide to keep the plastic. By spreading the fact that we can help out by getting rid of plastic straws entirely maybe our earth will become a cleaner place.

Nowadays, with our advanced technology, many kids have access to devices. It could be a three year playing with a iPad, an 8 year old watching youtube videos all night long, an 11 year old demanding a phone, or even a 14 year old glued to instagram. Should kids really be spending that much time on their devices? There is a simple answer to this problem. No! Did you know that 6-in-10 kids don’t get enough sleep just because they are playing on their devices? Here are some reasons why kids should have limits to their device time.

Many kids are getting their hands on phones very early. According to article 1, “the average age for a child to get their first smartphone is 10.3 years (and falling)”. It’s also not just phones, it’s iPads, tablets, computers, and more. When your at the store or your walking through town, you see a 9 year old with a phone in their hand or pocket. Kids who are getting phones to young, are also using them too much. Using devices too much means kids aren’t interacting with the world around them. They aren’t playing outside and getting exercise, socializing with friends, spending time with their family.

Too much device time can also lead to harmful effects on kids. Too much device time can lead to brain issues, especially for younger kids. Article 2 states “a recent study found that the brain chemistry of kids who fell into the category of smartphone or Internet addiction was different from that of non-addicted kids.” It also leads to depression and even suicide. “A recent study reported that teens who spent more time on screens in the form of social media, internet, texting, and gaming thought about suicide a lot more than kids who didn’t: about 48% of those who spent five or more hours a day on their phones had thought about suicide or made plans for it, while 28% of the teens who spent only one hour per day on their phones”. (Stated in article 2)

Being on devices all the time also takes away from reading and school related things. Your brain is set on your phone or device and not on a book. If you're spending too much time on your devices, you'll never want to read either. If I'm on my device for a long time, my mind gets sort of tired and I'm not in the mindset of reading. It is very important to be reading and devices get in the way of that. In article 2, it states, “the researchers, from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, had families rate how much time their kids spent on screens and how much time they spent reading actual books. The children’s brains were scanned, to assess how regions involved in language were connected, and it turned out that screen time was linked to poorer connectivity in areas that govern language and cognitive control.

In conclusion, kids should have limits to device time. Devices take away from the world around you, lead to brain damage, and even depression. So, put your device down! Go interact with the world around you!

  81. Catastrophic Climate Change
    by Joey Oliver

    https://climate.nasa.gov/evidence/

Climate change is an issue that the world has been conversing about for a long time. There are lots of ways climate change can transpire, like the biotic process, the sun's radiation, tectonic plate movement, volcanic eruptions, and global warming. Climate change is a big problem and hurts the earth in numerous ways, like global temperature rise, warming oceans, shrinking ice sheets, glacial retreat, sea level rise, and extreme weather events (like hurricanes). Some people think that climate change is not even real or not a big deal, and a lot of people don’t know what climate change is. But the majority of people agree that climate change is a serious issue we need to be aware of

Climate change is very serious and something that everyone should be aware of. For example, with water levels rising in lakes, the beaches of those lakes are being whisked away. And in many cases, the water level has almost reached the boardwalks perched high above the beaches. Another reason climate change is becoming serious are the tornadoes that climate change causes. On August 6, 2018 a tornado hit North America. It killed one person and destroyed much property. As you probably know, tornadoes are life threatening and destroy cities and towns. That’s how dangerous climate change is, it is literally life threatening. One life threatening event after another, brings my next reason why climate change is serious. Heat waves cause the death of many people and animals. Recently, Japan was hit with a crazy triple digit heatwave. Heat waves can easily cause heat stroke, even people are drinking lots of water. Elena Manaencova, deputy head of the World Meteorological Organization, said this on the recent heat wave, “This is not a future scenario.” So you can clearly see climate change is a serious problem that is happening right now.

In conclusion, climate change is something that we need to be aware of and work together to create solutions now. We need to learn how to decrease the effects of climate change before it is too late. Climate change is an immediate threat to humanity’s well being, and the planet’s health too. If there is a solution, we need to find it before climate change causes events that take numerous lives and permanently destroy our earth.

  82. An estimated 1.2 million dogs in shelters are euthanized every year and about 40% of those dogs are pit bulls, this is a real issue in today's society. While pit bulls are not actually a specific breed and instead a category of dogs that usually contains dogs such as the American pit bull terrier, and the Staffordshire terriers. Many of these dogs could potentially be adopted if they were not labeled as pit bulls because of the pit bulls bad reputation as fighting dogs. It has been shown that even dogs that are categorized as pit bulls and are actually just look alikes have a longer wait in the shelter than dogs of other breeds just because of their label. We need to stop avoiding certain breeds because every dog deserves a chance, violence is not nature but is nurtured.

The people training the dogs are the problem not the dogs. This category of dog that is known to have “aggressive” behavior is purely trained and these dogs are not born aggressive contrary to many people's thoughts. People love to believe that it is never their fault and is always something or someone else’s fault when something goes wrong and it’s no different when it comes to training an animal. People that have a dog with aggression may blame it on the dog but what they don’t know is that it all stems from the way they were trained, some ways dogs can develop aggressive behavior is when you consistently leave your dog tied up and unattended or training with aggressive correction. Those dogs with aggression issues could be the sweetest animals if it weren't for their owners.

We should start treating all breeds the same. Did you know that the pit bulls are rated very high by American Temperament Test Society as friendly dogs, which is a fact ignored by many that believe they are purely fighting dogs. No dog is meant to be mean or cruel but any dog can be like that if treated wrong, no breed is more aggressive than any other because any dog can be abused and become scared of people. I say scared because that is what they are experiencing, every animal has what is called a flight of fight reaction, and the dogs that are attacking are just choosing to fight instead of run away. Every breed of dog has this reflex so any dog can choose fight and hurt some one not just pit bulls, in fact it is more likely for you to get bite by a lab than a pit bull.

In conclusion, I believe that every dog should be treated the same and we should finally take the blame for our actions instead of blaming it on a innocent dog. Did you know that October is pitbull awareness month? Ways you can help are by volunteering at local pit bull rescue centers or even going a step further and becoming a foster family to pit bulls looking for a forever home. Also you could help encourage people that you know to adopt pit bulls from shelters and inform them of what these dogs really are and not what society thinks they are.

  83. Plastic straws. Something that many people use daily whether they are at home or going out. Though they are nice to have they are not necessary for most people. Most people use them not because they need to, because they are used mostly for convenience. I don’t think the pollution, waste, and harm they cause is worth a little more convenience in our daily life. I believe that single use plastic straws should be cut out of our daily lives.
Most single use plastic straws are not recyclable and create a lot of waste in landfills. Though they are small, they produce a lot of waste, they are polluting the environment and “in the U.S. alone, 500 million straws are used every single day.” (mic.com #1) Straws take up a lot of space in our landfills and that’s not the only place they end up in. Lots of them end up in the ocean. Straws in the ocean is a problem for sea creatures who might mistaken them for food. While tagging turtles Christine Figgener saw that there was something encrusted in the turtles nose. She thought it was a parasite or something like that. When she got a closer look she realized it was a plastic straw.
Many cities and restaurants are starting to get rid of plastic straws and come up with a better solution. “Joe’s coffee branches are just one of the places that has made a change and is now using 100% compostable straws made from cornstarch.”(mic.com#2) This is only one place but there are many more working to eliminate single use plastic straws. “It’s not difficult to find a slurping tool that’s less harsh on the environment.” (mic.com#1) There are a ton more options beside the cornstarch ones. There are metal, pasta, paper, bamboo, and many other biodegradable materials.
Even though plastic straws are just one thing, getting rid of them or substituting them can make a big impact and start something even more beneficial. I hope that you will start to cut down on the plastic straws and other plastic items to help create less pollution.

  84. ENDANGERED SPECIES

The food chain is a cycle of food where an animal eats another animal to survive. If one species goes extinct, then the food chain will cause a hole where another species used to eat the species that went extinct. Now that species may not have as much food, or in some cases, no food left and they will starve and die. Another food chain problem that’s caused by a species going extinct, is when an animal eats a plant to help control keeping the plant from overpopulating. If that species goes extinct, then no animals are eating the plant which will make the plant become overpopulated and that can cause that plant to destroy of animal habitats.

I believe that we should protect endangered species to keep the food chain in balance. This will insure that plants or species don’t overpopulate, or have another species become extinct or endangered because of the lack of food. If we kept the food chain in balance, then we might not have as many species of animals going endangered, because all the species would have enough food to eat, and wouldn’t starve. And one species can make sure another species doesn’t overpopulate and kill off another species.

An example proving that we should protect endangered species to keep the food chain in balance can be found in the article “What happens when something in a food chain goes extinct” on the Seattlepi education website (www.education.seattlepi.com) it states, “The harelip sucker fish, for example, used to eat snails in the 19th century. After waste, topsoil and other debris invaded rivers where the fish lived, the snail population dwindled. The U.S. Geological Survey notes that this decline probably caused the fish to go extinct.” This explains that the harelip sucker fish used to eat snails, but after the snails decreased very greatly, the fish went extinct because of the lack of food. The food chain was effected from the snails that decreased by waste in the rivers, which caused the fish to go extinct. Another example that we need to protect the endangered species to keep the food chain in balance can be found in the article “ Balancing Act: Otters, Urchins and Kelp” on the KQED Sience website (www.kqed.org/quest), which states that sea urchins can become overpopulated and destroy other species habitats like kelp forests. Otters eat sea urchins and help keep the population in check. But otters have become endangered because they are vulnerable to oil spills from ships. This is another reason why we should protect the endangered species.

As you can see, it is extremely important that we protect endangered species to keep the food chain in balance. If the food chain stays balanced out and all the species have no lack of food, then it can prevent the extinction of more animals. And if we help protect the endangered species, then we can help grow the endangered species and get them off the endangered animals list. This shows that we should protect the endangered species to keep the food chain in balance.

  85. Should we keep zoos? By: Megan Ruby

Zoos are a fun attraction where you can see all kinds of animals you wouldn't be able to see outside your front door. Some zoos provide encounterings with some of the animals where you can see the animal up close and personal and maybe even get to feed the animal. But are zoos needed or a good thing in this world? I think yes. I believe we should keep zoos. First, zoos provide educational learning about animals, secondly, zoos provide a protected environment for endangered animals, lastly, animals that live at zoos have extra benefits. Some people may not think this, but zoos an important thing in the environment.

First of all, Zoos provide education learning about the animals. When kids go to the zoo, they learn at least a couple facts on some of the animals there and they may be inspired to learn more about animals and may develop a love for animals. According to Vittana.org, “The modern zoo plays a critical role in educating children and families about different animals with whom we share this planet with.” We need more people in this world who love animals and care for them because of all the animals becoming endangered or even extinct. Theses people will help protect these animals and stand up for them. Another little example of this reason is when I went to the Detroit zoo recently this summer, I remember some signs they had out about the pollution of water bottles, walking or riding your bike instead of driving, global warming and endangered animals. They also had recycling bins out to encourage families to recycle. All of this educates families about the problems on our planet and ways to help solve them. The more people to help solve these problems in our environment the better.

Secondly, zoos provide a protected environment of endangered animals. Endangered animals is on of the biggest problems on our planet but zoos can help protect these animals. According to Vittan.org, “Having a zoo provides these animals with a safer place to live because they are behind multiple layers of protection” Zoos can help revive these animals and bring the population up and release most of them into the wild. With the help with zoos around the world, they can help the endangered animals until no longer extinct.

Lastly, animals that live at zoos have extra benefits. Out in the wild, animals have to hunt, protect and do everything for themselves, but when they live at a zoo, they’re feed for, protected from predators and care for if sick. Green.org states “Good examples of these benefits are proper nutrition, and medical care for injuries for a species that may not get them for themselves.” While still having similar things that there type of species has in the wild, they get extra benefits that they don't behave in the wild.

In conclusion, I believe we should keep zoos. Zoos back then weren't that good for animals. They just found or bought an animal put it in a cage, gave them some food and water and hoped for the best. That's when zoos weren't so great. But zoos have improved greatly since then. Animals are feed with proper care and are watched in case they get sick hurt or need medical help. Zoo workers are educated about the animals and most workers even have bonds with the animals there and really care for them and they actually know what they’re doing. This is when zoos can do great things in our world.

  86. Immigration is a well known topic that has been a problem since the day our country became. Some assume that its not a big deal, others are strongly against it. Recently though, people have been hearing more and more about it. Our current President, Donald Trump is searching and testing ways to put an end to illegal immigration. Out of all these things he has tried it's making people angrier and the number of decreasing immigrants is relatively small ( article two). also sometimes when immigrants do sneak in we let them stay here forever and just focus on keeping more from entering. I think overall we should focus on encouraging the pathway of legally entering the United States.

One thing we may be able to do is help other country's out. some of what we've been doing lately has been the opposite. In article two it states that most immigrants were reportedly fleeing to get away from poverty and violence. There are many reasons of why we don't want, and can't have illegal immigrants always crossing the boarder such as they could be smuggling drugs. Also if we just let anyone in then everyone would come over. Here there are good well paying jobs and safe comforting places to live or raise a child. This is why we have many ways that someone would be aloud to come to the United States. In article two it says you could use a visa, or application for citizenship. Some reasons that people are not using them is because they fear rejection, it's a long process, and you may have to know some english. In order to help people that really truly want to come to the United States for a good reason we could look at the application that would have to be filled and see if we could make applications more accessible and efficient. I believe this way people would be more motivated to fill it out, hopefully get accepted, and legally cross. there are many things that we could do to prevent people from illegally crossing the boarder but what we have been doing is a little harsh in my opinion and is not necessary. In article one it mentions that the President has been threatening immigrants and taking there children away from them if they illegally cross. Some mothers were separated from there kids for a whole week. Like I mentioned before if it was not such a long stressful process to apply I think most people that wanted in for a good reason would likely apply.

in conclusion this is a large topic and there are a variety of opinions on it. I think what some need to realize is that not everyone crossing the boarder is doing it for a bad reason. there are a various amount of poor countries and people want to cross over to America to escape the poverty, violence , and altogether unsafeness of there country. if we make our applications for legal crossings more accessible and efficient I believe the amount of illegal immigrations will decrease.

  87. Public School and Private School
    Anna Voto

Public versus Private! The debate sends many parents researching for days at a time, but does it have to be that complicated? According to greatschools.org nearly 1 in 4 parents are currently considering switching their child's school from Public to Private or Private to Public just because of their income. It’s no secret that private schools tend to have hefty tuition fees, or that public schools are payed for in taxes. But what does that mean for your family?

I believe in public schools for many reasons. Larger class numbers, diversity, non religious classes, and more musical and athletic based classes. Granted those things are all not true for all public schools, but in my experience Clarkston has done pretty good! Most public schools value having smaller class sizes for younger kids, but as students get older they group more of them together. Personally I think this is a good thing because it seems better to have younger kids feel more comfortable with their classmates, to feel like a family with them until they learn how to be more social with strangers.

Another issue I have with private schools is that they practice something called “counseling out”. According to Time.com this is when private schools recommend other schools for children with learning disabilities. That is fine, but I think it is better for a school to have qualified staff to teach children with disabilities. What if the child learned they have a disability while already at a private school? Would they expel them? Another type of standard private school has is that they cost more out of pocket, so many people expect higher test scores and better behaved pupils. But, according to Time.com this is not the case. Harvard Professor Martin Feldstein says that, “In America, students at private schools generally do not perform better than public schools at standardized tests.” I think this is because public schools have a set curriculum where private schools can change their lessons to test material, commonly called “teaching to the test” where kids learn more test material than government required lessons. Haven’t we all taken a test where we have seen words or questions you can swear you have never heard in your life? I know I have.

Public schools are just my preference, you can choose whatever you like, or don’t choose at all! But next time you want a change or have a sibling deciding schools, remember, public schools is a huge benefit to your education and life!

  88. I researched the issue of teens and social media. Many teens have access to social media and use it often. There is data that says that this might not be a good idea.

Have you ever felt like you were glued to your phone? Felt like you had to have a device with you at every moment to make sure you weren't missing out? Well, about 18% of teens spend more than 3 hours a day on their social media! Kids shouldn't have social media because it can cause depression, anxiety, and loneliness. One reason teens should not have social media is because they don't learn to communicate face to face. Secondly, Cyberbullying can occur. And last but not least, Studies have shown Social media has many different mental health concerns.
One of the reasons teens should not have social media is because they don't develop necessary social skills. In the article titled, “Impact of Social Media on Self Esteem”, it states,
“Modern teens are learning to do most of their communicating while looking at a screen.” This can become a problem because as teens get older and turn into adults, many jobs require human interaction and also as teens get older they need to develop lasting friendships. Also, when you are communicating through social media, you cannot read someone's body language and miscommunication can happen.
Secondly, teens should not use social media because cyberbullying is becoming a problem.
In the same article, “Impact of Social Media on Self Esteem”, It claims, “Kids text all sorts of things that you would never contemplate saying to another's face.” When you can't see another person's reaction to your words, suddenly it feels like you can say anything that you want to. Kids can get very hurt and become depressed and develop anxiety by cyberbullying and mean comments said by other people through social media.
Lastly, Kids should not have social media because teens can increase or develop mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, loneliness, and sleeplessness. In the article, “ Social Media and Teen Anxiety”, it says, “ Many experts have known a rise in mental issues among teens- a rise that coincides with the release of the first IPhone 10.” Social media compares people's lives and actually keeps data on how much people like what you are doing. Some teens cannot handle the stress of being constantly compared with their friends and it makes them feel like something is wrong with them.
In conclusion, Kids should not have social media because they can't communicate face to face, cyberbullying is a problem, and lastly it can cause mental health issues. So, who is with me to end these problems and end kids owning social media?

  90. Immigration and Deportation
    First part of my essay:
Since Trump's taking of office, he has been cracking down hard on immigrants. In the article by Anna O. Law "This is how Trump's deportations differ from Obama's" said that "Since Trump took office, immigration arrests are up more than 32.6 percent." When the undocumented immigrants get deported, say, parents, they are then separated from their kids and are sent back to the country they were born in. In the article by Caitlin Dickerson,"Hundreds of immigrant children have been taken from parents at U.S. border but new data reviewed by The New York Times shows that more than 700 children have been taken from adults claiming to be their parents since October, including more than 100 children under the age of 4.How would you feel if your parents got deported and you couldn't see them for a long time? Although I respect that President Trump is taking the immigration laws more seriously and keeping out terrorists, drugs, and trafficking, there are people who are detained who don't have a criminal record. That is where I think it has gone a little too far. Furthermore, I think that President Trump should pay more attention to who he is deporting.

Getting a better life, a good job, is the American dream. But getting into America legally is the hard part. This is one of the reasons why there are a lot of undocumented immigrants. The reason why it's so hard is that you have to go through a long process of steps just to get the little paper documents saying you're free to roam "🎵 In the land of the free! And the home of the brave!🎵" You can’t just get citizenship just by filling out forms. You will have to appear for interviews, pay fees and take up tests. It might take a long time to complete. According to the article by Immigration Direct, How difficult is it to Become a US citizen, “ Before filing your naturalization application, you must first make sure that you are eligible to file the form. A person who looks forward to become a US citizen must meet few prerequisites and must not be a minor below age 18.If you have a criminal background, your application for US citizenship will not be considered. Moreover, you must not leave the country after filing Form N-400 and you must remain in America until you take the oath of Allegiance.”and so on. There are still more things that you have to do such as submit your fingerprints, learn English, know the fundamental US laws/history. That is why it is so difficult to get citizenship in the US.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Second part of my essay:
I am for President Trump taking security/criminal activity more seriously on the other hand I think that he should care for people that are deported who don’t even have a criminal record. Furthermore, instead of automatically deporting immigrants who don’t have legal documentations, President Trump should look to see if they have a criminal record and check their files. If they are good to go, then just give them the opportunity to file for immigration so they can just be legal already and keep their families together!

Nevertheless, President Trump actually did retreat on separating families. According to the article by Michael D. Shear, Abby Goodnough and Maggie Haberman, “Trump retreats on Separating Families, but Thousands still remain apart” said that “President Trump has faced immense political pressure to end the separation of migrant families at the border. His executive order will seek to find ways to hold parents and children together.”
Plus a quote from President Trump himself, “We’re going to have strong — very strong — borders, but we are going to keep the families together,” Mr. Trump said as he signed the order in the Oval Office. “I didn’t like the sight or the feeling of families being separated.” Because of the separation of families, the difficult process of US citizenship, and just deporting people even if they have no criminal background, is why I think President Trump should have payed more attention to who he was deporting.

Whether you are hearing about it in the news or experiencing it in restaurants, a new issue has been brought to everyone around the worlds attention. Plastic straws are killing our marine life. Weather you agree with it or not, you may not understand how bad the circumstances are.
As I stated before people might not agree with cutting back on the usage of plastic straws because they don't know the effects of using them. I however, understand and agree with the cutting back on usage of straws, after finding out that during the international coastal cleanup, plastic straw debris was found on the top ten list. This debris then breaks down into little microscopic segments which can get in to sea life's nasal passages and throat which have and can cause death to many. To save our sea life cutting back can and will save our beautiful sea creatures.
Many people may say that if we do stop using plastic straws what else do we use? Well, according to time.com other options are cups that don't need straws, a biodegradable paper straw or reusable metal or plastic straw. Although using these other types of straws my be a change and take some getting used to just think about how many sea animals you are saving.
I would hope that after reading this people would think twice about next time they use a plastic straw and be open to all of the other options.

All children should go to school

You most likely wake up in the morning and dread going to school. The idea of waking up early, grades, being tired, work, homework makes students eyes roll to the back of their heads. Some days you may even wish school didn’t exist. But some kids around the world are struggling to get any form of education. In fact 57 million kids don’t have any schools to go to! Education (having education for kids) is something the world is struggling with. I think that more schools can be made so all kids should have some sort of an education and go to school. One reason because they can get better jobs that pay good, and another reason is because education can reduce getting communicable diseases.

I think all children should be able to go to school because getting an education can help you get better jobs. Places like Nigeria, Ethiopia, ect are very poor and most jobs include labor. If the children got an education, they could be working in companies that change/ help the world and also pay good. Many of the children have lots of potential to being smart and love to go to school, so they miss so much opportunity to have good jobs because there are not enough schools for them to go to. Poverty and education are inextricably linked, because people living in poverty may stop going to school so they can work, which leaves them without literacy and numeracy skills they need to further their careers. Their children, in turn, are in a similar situation years later, with little income and few options but to leave school and work.” says childs fund international. This further shows how important school can be. Jobs involving education pay better and don't usually include a huge amount of physical labor which could help so many families because they would be getting better money which they could use to take care of their family. It would also help them because they have less of a chance of getting hurt because of too much labor. More schools should be made so all children can have education.

Most poor places in the world that don't have education also suffer from communicable diseases. “A Communicable, or infectious diseases, are caused by microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi that can be spread, directly or indirectly, from one person to another.” says https://www.afro.who.int/health-topics/communicable-diseases. When children go to school, the schools teach them simple methods like washing their hands after they use the restroom and before they eat and to not touch other. There are also so many other ways on how to prevent communicable diseases. About 40 million people die from diseases each year that could be prevented. This number is astonishing. With more schools they can teach children how to prevent these diseases. They can show children how to stay clean and healthy which can lead to better lives. All children should be able go to school and get an education.

In conclusion going to school can help with so many things and all kids should be able to go to one. It can help get better (non-labor) jobs that will then help provide for their families and with jobs that pay better. Going to school can even help prevent diseases by teaching kids simple routines like washing their hands and keeping their hands to themselves. “A human being is not attaining his full height until he is educated” - Horace Mann.

Do you ever feel like homework is just piling and it's beginning to be too much? In some cases this is frequent. In most cases, the child is being given four times what the child needs. (Why you should give way less homework) This becomes a problem for students as well as adults and teachers. Students are tired and less sharp, teachers grade more homework and parents have to help kids on homework. First, sometimes homework is just busy work, second, too much homework can be overwhelming. Third, kids with more homework can be less healthy.

When homework is plain busy work, what’s the point? It wastes everyone's time and doesn’t help the students learn, which is the whole point of homework. “ It waste’s the students’ time doing it, the parents’ time helping it, and our time tracking and possibly even grading it. Just because a worksheet is part of the curriculum (or even came with a Teachers Pay Teachers lesson), doesn’t mean that we need to assign it. If it doesn’t serve a vital purpose, then what’s the point?” Said a math teacher who was addressing busywork. Busywork is no fun for anyone, so we should at least get rid of that.

Too much homework can be overwhelming. Think about it. The stress. Staying up late, and not thinking straight because your tired the next day. On top of that, a kid struggling in the subject could take what would be 5-10 minutes 45-60 minutes. (Why we should give way less homework) That means the student would be even more tired and soak up even less information and do even worse in the class, benefiting nothing and setting them up for failure. “Homework is often assigned to improve test scores. Although this can provide positive outcomes, including better study skills or habits, the fact is that when children are tired, they do not absorb much information. When children have more homework than recommended, test scores actually go down. Stress levels go up. Burnout on the curriculum occurs. The results for many students, according to research from Ruben Fernandez-Alonso in the Journal of Educational Psychology, is a decrease in grades instead of an increase.” So in some cases they would do worse on tests than they would have if they hadn’t studied.

Kids with more homework can be less healthy. Kids that could have run around and had fun would instead being cooped up in a room giving their body no exercise. Kids playing outside has decreased to 40% in the past few years. (Why we should have way less homework) That's a huge decrease and these kids can be like 7 year old not being able to be a kid.

In conclusion, I think that schools should give less homework, so that students can have less stress and it can be to everyone's benefits. So the students can use homework to actually learn and wouldn’t waste anyone's time.

  96. One hot summer afternoon, a mom from Waterford, MI accidentally locks her 2 month old baby in her car. She calls 911 for help but the dispatcher refuses to send any help, then tells her to call a towing company. Leaving the mom with no other choice then to break open her back window to save her baby.

I believe the dispatcher was wrong to not send any help. I think that if she was in the mother's position she would want help from 911. Everyone grows up believing that if they ever need help they should call 911, that's exactly what this mom was doing. "We should have responded in this case and we should respond in any similar case when there is a concern for the health, safety or welfare of any person, especially a young child.” says Waterford Police Chief Scott Underwood. Also, this kind of matter is included in the a 911 dispatchers job description, source below.

In conclusion the dispatcher was wrong and should have contacted the Fire Department. The Waterford Police claim that the dispatcher will receive discipline. Let's hope this kind of thing does not happen again.

  97. Many women have been treated differently because of their gender and have been underestimated on their ability to do things that men do.. They have often been expected to do the cooking and cleaning, or take care of children. I hope that someday in the near future women are treated with respect.
I believe that women should be treated as equal as men. I believe that women should be treated equally because female is just a gender. Some people think that when they get married their wife becomes “theirs”, almost like they are we are their property. Just because we are woman doesn’t mean we deserve to be treated like we are property of other men. “But humour aside, there is a real problem with the woman who have become her husbands’ property and expect every other woman to do so too. ” It states in Times Live, the article linked below. This shows one way that women have been treated differently. Another example is that woman
Woman have also been treated like they are incapable of doing some of the things that men have done. One example is baseball compared to softball. In baseball you overhand pitch, but in softball you underhand pitch. People don’t think that women are strong or capable enough to overhand pitch. A second example is in politics. A women has not been elected for president, yet over 50% of the population is made up of women. “The United States still doesn’t have a female leader, as it hasn’t for the last 227 years. Women make up roughly 20 percent of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, and 12 percent of U.S. governors.” It states in The Atlantic. In Times Live it also states, “I have four more degrees than my husband, each of which bears my surname. Not my maiden name. MY surname. I have accomplished great things with my own identity. Not my husband’s.” This shows the capability that woman have and how underestimated they are.
Woman have been underestimated and treated with inequality for a while now. My favorite quote is, “empowered women empower woman.” I believe that Men and Women should be treated as though they are the same because female is just a gender. Women are very capable!

  98. Do you have a family member with a heart problem? Well there is a chance that the problem can be genetic which means that you could also possibly have it. Some heart diseases are genetic and some are not. Acorrding to Bayer.com "By the middle of the twentieth century heart disease had become the leading cause of death around the globe."

There are many diffirent types of heart disesaes,Some include brugatta syndrome which is when your heart rate gets to high or to low. According to US natural library of medicine "brugada is basically when your normal heart rhythm is disrupted". Another is when you have to much cholesterol in your veins and arteries which causes them to get clogged. This can be treated by stenting which is when a small pipe with a inflatible attached to it that compresses the plaqe and then get taken out. One more disease is myocardius which is when your heart can flare up in some places which can cause a heart attack. According to the Myo Foundation, "These attacks can happen on healthy people" so you can still get this even if your body is treated correctly.

In conclusion, Heart diseases can be very deadly and if you have a family member that has one than you should check yourself.

  99. Human Impact on the Lives of Animals

Every day humans are discovering new resources and environments. This sounds like an amazing thing until you think about the circumstances of our wildlife. We are discovering new things every day but as we are discovering, we are destroying. People need to be more aware of what's going on in our wildlife and make a change because it is hurting innocent animals. To prevent animals from going extinct, humans need to reduce their carbon footprint.

I beileve that people should put in more considaration into the fact that we are wrecking and tearing down the trees which are the homes of so many of animals. This is increasing our carbon footprint which we need to be reducing to save our wildlife. According to the Pegasus Foundation, the carbon footprint is an “individual's amount of CO2 and methane gas you release into the environment by consuming energy.” I think that people should have more care for nature and our environment because all it is doing is hurting, and even worse, killing animals and plants. Everybody needs to see the potential harm this can do to our earth. Many animals becoming extinct.

Another factor that goes into our negative impact on wildlife is humans’ discare of pollution. Our pollution to the wildlife has been increasing over the years. As stated in the article “Humans Impact on Environment and Animals”, “Scientists fear that 30 to 50 percent of the world’s species could be extinct by the end of the century”. Animals are going extinct abnormaly fast because of us. We are pulluting the air and tearing down their natural habitats. We need to have more care for our wildlife. Also according to “Humans Impact on Environment and Animals”, “a third of species are threatened with extinction in the near future” This is a clear red light showing that we are destroying and polluting the wildlife. In addition, as stated in the article “Human Impacts on the lives of Animals”, “the ocean absorbs about a quarter of the carbon dioxide that humans have pumped into the air. All of the carbon has affected the ocean’s chemistry and made it more acidic. The increased acidity of the ocean harms the various organisms living in it.” This could potentially expose many sea animals to diseases or even kill them. We, as humans, are taking advantage of the wildlife and having no care for their well being.

In order to try and stop the extinction of so many species, we need to not only be more aware of the destruction we are causing but the impact our carbon footprint is having on all species. I believe that we need to have more care for our wildlife’s well being and stop destroying, invading, and polluting their homes. Due to our disregard of the animals on land and in the water, we are leading so many animals to extinction at a rapid pace.

  101. Year-Round School Schedule
    By Noah Puzio

Year-round school schedule has been growing over the years and it makes sense considering all of its benefits. A year-round school schedule is where you don't have a big long summer vacation. You have the school year split into six week chunks with three week breaks in between and a one month summer break. If you do the math, it's still the same with about 180 days of school throughout the year.
I would be happy if Clarkston Community Schools changed to the schedule because of all of the perks. One of the benefits of having the schedule is that over summer break you don't forget all of the stuff you learned in school. Before I started this assignment I had to think back to what my other teachers told me so I can try to have a good essay. I wouldn't have to do that if we changed to the year-round schedule. Another gain is that you don't have to re-learn stuff at the beginning of the year. As Sheri Saurer states “Teachers may find it difficult to get through the entire curriculum. When the new year begins, time is spent reviewing and re-teaching concepts and material from the previous year.” Time is wasted when you have to do that and if you didn't you may have less summer homework. I had two whole math units to get through this summer because we didn't have enough time during the school year. If we didn't have to review then there would probably be at least half a unit less to do. Dr. Katie Davis agrees. She states that "they lose the gains they made and start the school year at a lower level than where they ended the previous school year.” Some kids keep up during the summer reading and going to museums and camps that keep their mind active but as it states in business insider, "Over time, those incremental advantages can spell the difference between who gets placed into elite colleges and high-paying jobs and who drops out." With 13 years of school a lot of good education or bad can happen when the "little" things build up.

In conclusion, I believe that a year-round school schedule would be a good thing and it helps in many ways. Such as not forgetting stuff over the long summer, you can save time by not re-learning thing you already learned, and can affect you in many positive ways in you future.

  102. One thing that everyone loves all around the world is entertainment. We all adore movies, music, tv shows, and videogames, but one of the most popular and loved is sports. We have football, baseball, soccer and ones we don’t really play, like Cricket or Rugby. That has many adults and kids playing sports as well for fun, Girls and Boys. But should girls and boys be on the same teams?
A bunch of people argue against it because of men being stronger than women, and while that can be true, it also be this. In an article titled “The Girls’ Soccer Team That Joined A Boys’ League and Won It.” Follows the story of a Spanish team of girls that beat out 13 other boys’ teams “I always try to show that soccer isn’t just for boys,” Gómez said. “If you’re technically better, you can compensate for being perhaps physically weaker.” The article mentions that it isn’t all that common for females to upstage their male counterparts in certain countries. And that can help prove that not all males are stronger than women, and women can be strong.
A big reason that we should have both girls and boys on teams is to have teamwork. While it isn’t uncommon in class to have mixed teams, it isn’t outside. Boys and girls tend to separate and that may seem normal, but you do need to know how to use teamwork boys and/or girls. You may get a job or do a presentation and you need to learn to work with the other. “Many sports advocates believe that even at a grassroots level, mixed training and competition can foster mutual respect; improve both boys’ and girls’ social skills; enhance resilience; and provide experiences that will help them in their broader lives.”
While many will disagree, we do need more opportunities to have boys and girls cooperate more in sports. In the end, There should be teams of boys separate from girls, but we should have mixed teams as well. So, do you think girls and boys should be the same?

  104. Segregation was a way of the past and is yet still going on. What are we, as a nation, going to do to make it stop? According to the dictionary, segregation is the enforced separation of different racial groups in a country, community, or establishment. In America, segregation began with the civil rights movement and yet it still exists today.
Americans are choosing segregation today. Reniqua Allen from The Guardian in her article, ‘Our 21st-century Segregation: We’re Still Divided by Race’, said, “There are two Americas, one for brown people, one for whites. The difference is that we choose it today.” When the civil rights movement began, America split in two. One for people who agreed with the movement and people who didn’t. Choices always have consequences. Former Alabama senator, George Wallace’s words still seem appropriate. In 1963, he famously said, "Segregation today. Segregation tomorrow. Segregation forever."
The idea of segregation forever seems hopeless for people suffering now. According to Michael Cassidy, “Poverty isn’t shared equally. In 2010, 70 of the 100 largest U.S. metropolitan areas, home to more than half the American population, were so segregated that half of blacks would need to change neighborhoods to be equally mixed with whites.” Unless we do something about segregation, these separations seem written in stone.
Why, after all of the work that we’ve done to eliminate segregation, does it still exist in our educational system? According to Michael Cassidy, “Whites are two to three more likely to attend highly selective colleges than blacks—and racial disparities have actually widened in the last 30 years.” His article also states that, “Just 18 percent of blacks are college graduates, compared with 30 percent of whites.” How is this possible?
It’s really disappointing that our country can’t share. It’s disappointing that America doesn’t understand that it doesn’t matter what color we are. America needs to reinvent itself into something better.

Our oceans are full of plastic, from floating on the surface to the deepest depths. Around 8 million metric tons of plastic is thrown into the ocean every year. Two hundred and thirty six thousand of which is microplastic, tiny pieces of broken down plastic that is often eaten by animals which has affected greatly some species. By 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans than there are fish in weight. Our oceans are valuable, and something valuable should be taken care of. To save our oceans will require changing our human habits.

Many people aren't aware of our suffering ocean and species that are being affected because of our poor decisions, so we need to share the horrible truth so we can start righting our wrongs. There are five massive patches of plastic in our oceans. These patches of plastic are created by currents that trap the plastic debris and swirl it all together. Plastic doesn't always endup in these patches. It travels all over our oceans going distances that seem impossible for a piece of plastic to travel. For example, in january 1992 a cargo ship headed from hongkong to washington hit a storm. 12 containers fell overboard spilling 28,000 bath toys into the pacific ocean. Then the toys starting to wash ashore along the alaska and washington coastlines, some even made it the british isles.

Even if we cleaned up all the garbage in the great garbage patches the garbage is just going to replenish itself, which is why we also need to change our bad habits and follow the five r’s of recycling; refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle. Refuse: Do I need this? What's its environmental cost? Reduce, resist impulse buying, ask yourself will I use this? How about more than thirty times? If no, don't buy it. Reuse, ditch disposable for reusable. Most of what we buy ends up in the trash. It goes to landfills, the oceans, becomes litter, and other harmful things. Reuse like earlier generations and make most of limited resources. Repurpose: take something that is not used much anymore and alter it to a more useful object. Last but not least, recycle whatever you can. Metal, wood, most plastics, paper and cardboard, recycle whenever possible if you've already gone through all of the other R’s.

One major contributor to plastic pollution is packaging. Things like plastic bags, six pack plastic rings, milk cartons, and other plastic packaging materials. On average, humans throw away 10 plastic bags a week, each. Millions ending up in the ocean and often getting eaten by animals and killing them. But some companie are finding ways to make safer packaging that's better for animals. Saltwater brewery invented a six pack ring thats is completely edible and one hundred percent biodegradable. The rings are made from barley and wheat remenets from their brewery, while still being tough enough to hold the weight of the cans. Saltwater brewery has show that there are better alternatives for packaging that can be safe for the environment, and still perform like the everyday product.

In conclusion, plastic pollution in the oceans and on our beaches is a growing problem that's going to require not few but many people to change the outcome. We need to find new alternatives to plastic and make that the everyday product, while informing more people about the benefits of recycling. Spread the word about plastic pollution and help save our oceans and marine life.

  106. Title: Texting while driving
    Written by: Cassidy Pittman

Texting while driving is dangerous. It has caused many injuries, even deaths. Texting while driving is dangerous because you're distracted and don't know what other people are doing so it puts other people in danger along with yourself. You could also be putting wildlife endanger. This is why I believe texting while driving should be banned everywhere, heavily enforced and have serious consequences.

If you text while driving you put yourself in danger. You can't see what you’re doing and could get in an accident. Texting while driving is the cause of many car crashes. (28 percent of accidents involve talking, texting on cell phones. The National Safety Council has announced that it estimates at least 28% of all car crashes – or at least 1.6 million crashes each year – are caused by drivers using cell phones and texting. - “28 percent of accidents involve talking, texting on cell phones”). You’re too distracted to know what's going on and don't know if there's a turn, light, or if some stops. Texting while driving is so dangerous that you could lose you life just to answer that one text.(At least 9 people are killed every day in the U.S. because of a distracted driver. - “Texting & Driving”). You should really have your full attention on the road to avoid accidents. Is it really worth is to check that one text message?

When texting and driving you put other people in danger. By being distracted you have no idea what the person in front of you is doing. They could stop, turn, or someone could even be crossing the street. Either way you could hurt someone else. (the US Department of Transportation reports that distracted driving played a role in nearly 6,000 deaths and 500,000 injuries in 2009. - “Texting and Driving”). Although texting and driving is banned in 46 states people still do it and get in numerous car accidents. The person in front of you could do anything while your not paying attention. (You are 3 times more likely to get into an accident when distracted by a cell phone while driving - “Distracted Driving”). You’re too distracted to be driving safely if you’re paying attention to your phone and not the road.

Texting while driving is very dangerous and you should not do it because you could seriously injure yourself or others. You Should never text while drive because it is dangerous and should be banned everywhere and the consequences of texting while driving should be more heavily enforced. This I believe will lower the chance of injuring yourself or other is texting while driving accidents.

    Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity is an ongoing issue in the United States. Childhood obesity is a major medical condition that affects children between the ages of two to nineteen. A child is obese when they are above the normal weight and height for their age. It can lead to other health problems like diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Obesity in children can also lead to feeling bad about yourself and depression.

Childhood obesity is a problem that many children suffer from. In the past couple of years people have been getting better about taking care of themselves and the number of children that are obese is going down. However, childhood obesity is a problem and we need to do something more about it.

Children aren’t getting the nutrition and exercise they need to have. More than 12 million us children are obese. According to Mayoclinic.org “…too little activity and too many calories from food and drinks — are the main contributors to childhood obesity”.
Many parents are busy working and don’t have time to make their kids a healthy meal. Even parents who are home don’t limit the amount of sugar, and let their kids just eat what they want when they want. A lot of my friends have snack cart money, so they are able to buy a treat at lunch. Children also need more exercise. According to stateofobesity.org, about 43% of high schoolers spend their day on video games and playing on their phone instead of getting exercise. Not getting enough exercise can lead to obesity too.

We need to do more about childhood obesity. Schools need to provide recess for children to get exercise during the school day. Parents should limit the amount of time their kids are on their electronics. Snack carts in schools should offer healthier options. Like smoothies or fruits and veggies. All these things can help prevent children from becoming obese.

  109. Penny Debate
    Caralyn Haas
There has been a long time debate on whether we should keep the U.S. penny or get rid of it. Some people think that we should get rid of it because they believe that pennies are worthless and cost more to make it than what we use it for. Some reasons why we should keep the penny is because prices would increase, nickels also cost more to make, charities use pennies and the poor would pay the most. The penny has been with us for a long time, so I believe that we should keep the U.S. penny.
All though it costs twice as much to make the penny then what is worth, you can end up paying hundreds of dollar more if we get rid of the penny because if an item is worth $5.93 a company will round down to $5.90, right? Wrong, that company will round up because they get more money. It may not seem like much only paying a few more cents, but by the end of the year the money will add up making you pay more.
Some people believe that we should get rid of the penny because it costs more than what it's worth. But if that is a reason to get rid of it that is like saying we should also get rid of the nickel. Every nickel costs 6.23 cents to make. The nickel is 1.23 cents more than what it is worth and the penny is only 1 cent above is value. In the article Penny Debate - Should We Keep The Penny or Get Rid of It? It states, “and, of course, if we eliminate the penny, we'll need a lot more nickels, which will offset the savings of stopping penny manufacture”. The savings to stop the penny manufacture will result to more taxes, which means even more money you lose.
Many charities use penny drives to get donations. People dont mind pouring out the jars of pennies to support the drive and think nothing of it. The Penny Debate: Do Pennies Make Sense? says that “charities that depend on penny drives would not be able to raise as much money”. Also, people would not part with nickels like they would pennies.
If we were to get rid of the penny, it is said that the poor would pay the most. According to Penny Debate - Should We Keep The Penny or Get Rid of It? “The poor are most likely to make more frequent, smaller purchases, thus suffering the rounding up more often”. Everyone would pay a price if we got rid of the penny.
Other people believe that we should get rid of the penny because it is worthless. Back then you might have been able to buy something with a penny. But now you can't really buy things for one cent. Also, a lot of people throw away pennies by accident.
All In all there are many reasons of why we should keep the penny and many reasons why we shouldn't keep it. The decision is up to you and your option. Reasons of why we should keep it like prices would increase, nichols also cost more, charities use pennies and the poor would pay the most support my option on the topic.

  110. Over the summer their has been an issue with red tides in Florida. Red tides occur when microscopic algal blooms. Red tides dont only discolor the water they also take away oxygen from the water and produce toxins harmful to animals in the water and humans. People should do more to prevent their pets and them from getting sick.
One way to avoid getting red tide sickness is by avoiding infected water. How you know when parts of water are infected is when the water is discolored, smells bad, and contains a lot of dead fish/animals. All you really need to do is pay attention to your surroundings and follow directions officials give you. According to Centers For Disease Control And Prevention " Be aware of advisories and health risks related to consuming contaminated fish and shellfish." Eating contaminated seafood is a big way of getting red tide.
Another way to prevent getting sick is making sure your dog doesn't get sick. To prevent that make sure your dog doesn't swim in contaminated water, drink contaminated water, lastly do not let your dog eat dead fish. You should watch your dog during algal blooms. According to River Landings Animal Clinic " If your pet swims in the red tide, wash it as soon as possible. Toxins can accumulate on the fur." If your dog gets red tide you might get it from petting them so remember to always keep them away from red tides.
So in conclusion red tide can be prevented. We can be more cautious and keep ourselves and pets safe.

  111. Should animals be used to test products?
    By: Kaylee Gibbs

Testing Unknown products on animals has been going around for quite a while now, testing products on animals it in humane, cruel and doesn’t help can tittering they are very different than humans. I strongly believe we should find some other way to test her new products car u unknown products on animals has been going around for quite a while now, testing products on animals it in human, cruel and doesn’t help can tittering they are very different than humans. I strongly believe we should find some other way to test our new products.
One reason, 100 million animals die each year from animal testing for no reason. The tests or even reliable, animal such as rats, or my eyes are much different than humans. (PETA.org) “ because animal tests are so unreliable, they make human trails more risky...The national institutes of health... Half end up being relabel because of side effects not identified and tests of animals.“ I don’t know about you but if even scientist can I get all the evidence they need from the animals, there is no point in torturing them. Would you like to be Herton start? That’s another reason but while we’re on this one, (animal-testing.procon.org) “ animals are very different than humans therefore they make poor test subjects”, “ professor of evidence-based toxicology at John Hopkins University argues… ‘We are not 70 KG rats’”. He is completely correct! We do not have the same Oregon, bunch structure reactions to things as rats and/or other animals. They could also be allergic to it, the people testing that may mess up, you never know!!
The other reason is just as important as the first one. As I said earlier, how would you like to be hurt and start? Not at all right?! These scientists are starving and shockingly is in the sea animals. (Animal-testing.procon.org) “ animal testing is cruel and inhumane, according to the Humane Society international, animals use an experience… Are… Forced inhabitation, food and water deprivation,… Physical restraint…” torturing animals is not what we are made to do. Animals have rights to, they help and are just as much a part of this world as we are. (PETA.org) “ The animal welfare act, allows animals to be burned, shocked, poison, isolated, starved… And pain killers are not even required!“ invite not required, they mean not used. Why would they spend money on something that used for them? They are cruel and selfish for all those reasons.
The ending The ending reason I chose this topic is because I have always had a special love for animals. I hate seeing people miss treat and Mr. to them. Especially when it’s for no reason or they think they don’t matter. If you have the same opinion, go and share it, speak up, and make a difference!

    The green going car

Everyday the earth is coming up with new ideas, inventions. Good, bad, eco friendly, non eco friendly. But one new invention that has impacted the earth, Tesla cars, have gotten a mixed variety of thoughts. From prices, efficiency, and how eco friendly it is. Being a electric powered car it runs on multiple natural sources. Making it a non gas filled car. That is why I think the tesla car is the environments new best friend.

The Tesla cars have many perks, being electrically powered and take no initial added fuel. Scientist have found that gasoline releases carbon emissions that affect the impact of global warming. With Tesla cars, being electrically powered no fuses are being released into the air. Another negative impact gasoline powered cars cause that can not be caused by tesla cars is danger to humans. Evannex, going green says “if you leave your garage door shut with your gas-powered car on, it can kill you.” With gas running from the car's tailpipe and fumes releasing it can have a dangerous impact on us. With the Tesla cars, running on electricity and other natural, renewable sources, the car is befriending the earth by not using away all of its limited resources, unlike gasoline powered cars. Although one or two ways to create electricity take using some non renewable resources, you are using very little of them.

Now that you see how many things these cars provide that gasoline cars don’t would you buy one of these cars? With new car designs being made up each day such as an electric powered car and autonomous cars, it is hard to tell what kinds of cars people will be driving one hundred years from now. But if we can all hope on board the electric car train, then there may be less pollution or less worry of global warming in the future.

Have you ever made a wish, then let a balloon float away? Most people think that there is no harm in letting a balloon go. But the truth is there is that there is harm done, to animals and the environment. Most balloons that are released end up on beaches and in the water. Releasing balloons could even be called littering because it will most likely end up in the ocean or on a beach somewhere. Balloons kill many animals each year. I believe that the releasing of balloons should be prohibited. There are many reasons why releasing balloons is hurting our environment and animals. In the article, "The Scary Reason Why You Should Never, Ever Release Balloons Into The Sky." Birds, whales, sea turtles, bighorn sheep and many other animals have been seriously injured or worse, killed because of balloons. Also, animals confuse balloons for their food, balloon strings can entangle animals harming or killing them. When animals consume balloons after confusing it for food, it can block their intestines and kill the animal by starvation. Many animals are killed because of balloons, there should be an alternative to this problem, so that less animals are killed because of balloons. In another article called, "Balloons and Wildlife: Please Don't Release Your Balloons." A cleanup in New Jersey collected over one hundred balloons on that one beach alone, imagine how balloons that is on all of the beaches and in the ocean. Another reason why letting balloons go should be prohibited is that helium is non-renewable source of energy, which means that once it is gone we cannot get anymore of it. We should save this gas for more important uses. Next, Some balloons hurt more than just animals, they can harm the environment and us. These balloons are called foil balloons. Foil balloons can cause fires and power outages by bumping into power lines. After that, There should be alternatives to releasing balloons, such as banners, flags, and pinwheels. Even planting trees or blowing bubbles rather than releasing balloons. These are all good alternatives to letting balloons go. Plus, Scientists are getting smarter, which means that they could create an edible and biodegradable balloons as a safe alternate without having to completely lose balloons. In conclusion, releasing balloons is a problem that needs to be attended to. I believe that the releasing of balloons should not be allowed. There are more environmentally safe alternates, rather than releasing balloons. Helium is a nonrenewable source of energy that should be used for more important occasions and the creation of an edible balloon could be another great alternative. These could all be solutions to the problems caused and created by the releasing of balloons.

    The Dangers of Air Pollution
Pollution is a serious danger to our planet. It could spell the end for all humanity. It is dangerously affecting the air in which we breath, and thus making life on earth in the future impossible. We need to stop polluting and start fixing this problem we, as humans, have made.
To begin with, humans enjoy many luxuries that have lead to a rise in Carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. In the article, Air Pollution, by National geographic, it states that, “Carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, is the main pollutant that is warming Earth. Though living things give off carbon dioxide when they breathe, carbon dioxide is considered to be a pollutant when associated with cars, planes, power plants, and other human activities that involve the burning of fossil fuels such as gasoline and natural gas.” In the past 150 years, such activities are pumping enough carbon dioxide into the atmosphere to raise its levels higher than they have been for hundreds of thousands of years. Humans need to think of better ways to produce our wants and needs that don’t send quite so much carbon dioxide into our atmosphere.
Also, through the destruction of our atmosphere, we are causing health problems for future generations. In the article by NRDC.org Air Pollution: Everything You Need to Know it stated that, “While we’ve made progress over the last 40-plus years improving air quality in the U.S. thanks to the Clean Air Act, climate change will make it harder in the future to meet pollution standards, which are designed to protect health,” says Kim Knowlton, senior scientist and deputy director of the NRDC Science Center. Our government needs to be thinking about how current laws will change to future of our planet and the health of humans. The long term effects of pollution are not fully understood, and this is why people need to become more dedicated to fixing this problem.
In conclusion, we need to stop air pollution and make our planet safe. Future generations are counting on our actions to give them an earth that is safe and prospering. Our government needs to work on creating laws that will protect the people from pollutions. It is time to stop thinking about just today, and plan for a better tomorrow.

  116. Water pollution
Many people don’t realize the effect of pollution. “As technology improves, scientists are able to detect more pollutants, and at smaller concentrations, in Earth’s freshwater bodies. Containing traces of contaminants ranging from birth control pills and sunscreen to pesticides and petroleum, our planet's lakes, rivers, streams, and groundwater are often a chemical cocktail.” Water pollution is when oils gasses or other harmful things enter a body of water. The main cause for water pollution is gas leaks. Even though you don’t hear about them everyday they do happen, and very frequently. Oil spills can happen from various things, including, oil factories, humans, underground oil tanks, and many other things. Water pollution does not only hurt animals it hurts humans and the environment around them. Many countries have polluted water because they don’t take care of the trash and mess they produce on a daily basis
I believe that people do not want to cause pollution but since they may not have the money or effort to clean up their mess it might just casually blow into the body of water closest to them and they never notice so they assume everything is fine and they keep creating a mess, and as they keep creating a mess the junk piles build up in the bodies of water and create pollution in the water. At the same time even though I feel bad for those people that are in that position, I believe that if you are in that position help our nation become healthier, cleaner and safer for our life, and the life on our nation.
Water pollution can be a hazard. Not only to animals but to humans too. In other countries people may drink the water from the closest river or water source and become ill or even die from the trash or gasses in the water. Scientists say at the Institute of Ecology at the Higher School of Economics, that they have discovered that drinking water in lakes in the Murmansk region is contaminated and very toxic to the human body. Many gasses and fuels are cuasing water pollution. The source Science daily describes how, “Carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides produced by industry and motor vehicles are common air pollutants.”
Now that you know the process of water pollution, I hope that you will take action in knowing what is right. So the next time you see trash around your neighborhood or somewhere else feel a push to make our world a healthier, cleaner nation.

People might think that it is not a big deal that honey bees have disappeared across Nations, right? No. Although honeybees make honey, they also have a huge impact on all the food we eat everyday. Honey bees have decreased about 40% from 2006. Honey bees are very important to our way of life. Here are the reasons why we need to protect the honey bees.

First of all, honey bees pollinate the flowers of many foods we eat every single day. According to article one, they state that, “ Some crops including blueberries and cherries are 90% dependent on honey bee pollination.” They also state that “Almonds, depend entirely on honey bee for pollination at bloom time”. So just think about how people would have barely any fruits or vegetables without honey bees.

Secondly, without honey bees our diet would suffer tremendously. According to article 2, they explain how if honey bees go extinct, many things people eat everyday like apples or berries will become very scarce. Another thing they explained is that out of 87 crops that require pollination, more than 30 are almost 100% dependent on pollination from honeybees.

Finally, honey bees pollination impacts more than just fruits and vegetables. According to article 1, without honey bees to pollinate there will be no almonds. That might not sound too bad but, did you know that cows have to eat almonds in there diet, and without almonds cows don't have proper nutrients for milk which causes all dairy products to either disappear or become very expensive.

Overall, bees help pollinate food and keep us healthy. We need to help take care of bees and they will help us back. Without bees who knows what life would be like.
